Bellinzona

Bellinzona lies at the foot of the Alps where several valleys meet, and it has long been a gateway between northern and southern Europe. Its history stretches back to Roman times, but the city flourished in the Middle Ages as a stronghold controlling the alpine passes, and later Swiss, Milanese and local rulers fought for it. The three castles, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, form one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in Switzerland and earned Bellinzona a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

History and Heritage Castelgrande, the oldest and largest of the three, rises on a rocky hill in the middle of the old town, with ramparts, towers and a museum that gives views over the whole valley. Montebello Castle, with its drawbridge and fortified walls, is a short walk uphill and holds exhibitions on the region’s past. Sasso Corbaro, higher still, was built in the late 15th century by the Milanese dukes of the Sforza family after the Swiss victory at Giornico, and it gives the widest views. Ancient walls and walking paths connect all three. The Fortini della Fame, small fortifications on the plain, belong to a 19th-century famine-relief project.

Main Attractions Beyond the castles, the old town is a pleasure to wander, with cobbled streets, pastel buildings and lively squares. The Saturday market fills Piazza Nosetto and nearby streets with local produce, cheeses and crafts, and has run since the 19th century. The Villa dei Cedri museum, set in a historic villa and park just outside the centre, shows art and hosts exhibitions, while the city’s churches add religious art. The Carasc Tibetan Bridge, a long pedestrian suspension bridge near Curzùtt, is a favourite for hikers and photographers, and the restored hamlet of Curzùtt and the medieval village of Prada, in the hills above, show rural Ticino at an earlier pace. Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano are both a short train ride away and make easy day trips.

Activities Bellinzona is lively all year. In spring and summer the city hosts festivals, open-air concerts and food events, while the surrounding hills offer hiking, cycling and viewpoints. Guided tours, including a Middle Ages walk and a family treasure hunt through the historic quarter, help visitors read the streets. Autumn brings wine harvest celebrations and colourful foliage, and the Rabadan carnival in February is the big winter event, with brass bands, costumes and a lively street party. Winter is otherwise quiet but atmospheric, with lights and cafés in the old town. The Italian-speaking heritage shows in the cuisine, the festivals and the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.

Getting There Bellinzona has a major railway station on the Gotthard line, with trains from Zurich and from Milan, and the station is a short walk from the old town and castles. The city is also connected by road, with parking near the centre, and local buses and cycling routes reach nearby villages and valleys.

Seasonal Advice April to October is the best period, with pleasant weather, lively castles and markets, and many outdoor events. Spring and early summer offer mild temperatures and gardens in bloom, and autumn suits wine tasting and cultural events. Winter is quieter but still charming, with fewer visitors. In any season Bellinzona’s mix of history, culture and alpine scenery makes a satisfying Swiss stop and a good base for lower Ticino.
