Castelgrande

Castelgrande is the largest and oldest of Bellinzona’s trio of UNESCO-listed castles, dramatically perched on a rocky hill that has seen continuous settlement for over 6,000 years. Its commanding position above the city has made it a strategic stronghold since Neolithic times, with layers of history visible in its walls—from Roman garrisons to medieval fortifications and the Milanese expansions of the 15th century. The castle has served as a bishop’s residence, a garrison, and a command post, with strict access once controlled by ducal decree.

Today, Castelgrande welcomes visitors to explore its ramparts, towers, and courtyards, offering sweeping views over Bellinzona and the surrounding valleys. The southern wing houses an archaeological-historical museum, where exhibits trace the castle’s evolution and the region’s turbulent past. The castle’s thick stone walls and imposing towers evoke the atmosphere of a true medieval fortress.

Castelgrande is open from April to October (10:00–18:00) and from November to March (10:30–16:00), with only this castle fully accessible in winter. Admission is CHF 15 for adults, with reduced rates and family tickets available; a Fortezza Pass grants entry to all three Bellinzona castles.
