Montreux

Montreux sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva, a resort that has drawn visitors since the 19th century, when its mild climate and scenery attracted European aristocrats, artists and invalids. The town’s Belle Époque architecture, grand hotels and lush gardens reflect its golden age as a spa and cultural retreat. Today it still charms with festivals, lakeside walks and views of the Dents du Midi and the surrounding Alps, framed by palms and magnolias that survive on the sheltered shore.

History and Heritage Montreux’s history is tied to its role as a crossroads of trade and culture. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century made it a fashionable resort and brought writers such as Vladimir Nabokov, who lived in a lakeside hotel for years, and musicians such as Freddie Mercury, whose legacy is marked by a statue on the quay. The old quarter above the lake has narrow streets and historic churches that recall the medieval village, and the promenade is lined with sculptures, flowerbeds and outdoor cafés. In 1971 a fire at the casino inspired a rock song that made the town famous around the world.

Main Attractions The centrepiece of Montreux is its palm-fringed promenade, which runs for several kilometres along the lake with fine views at every turn. The Freddie Mercury statue is a favourite stop for music fans, and the Montreux Jazz Festival, held each July, brings leading performers and a festive mood to the town. Château de Chillon, a short walk or boat ride away, is a beautifully preserved medieval castle on a rocky islet, with tours, exhibitions and views over the lake.

Getting There Montreux is reached by train from Geneva, Lausanne and Bern, with the station near the lake and the town centre. By car, the town is reached via the A9 motorway, with parking at several locations. Boat services run on Lake Geneva, connecting Montreux with Lausanne, Vevey and other lakeside towns, and the compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot or by bike. Vevey and its Chaplin sites are a short ride along the shore.

Spring and autumn offer milder temperatures, colourful landscapes and fewer visitors, good for sightseeing and wine tasting. Winter is quieter but atmospheric, with festive lights and cosy cafés.
