Lake Geneva Promenade

The Lake Geneva Promenade in Montreux is a flat lakeside walk along the northeastern shore of the lake, running from the town centre past Territet and the famous castle at Chillon and on toward Villeneuve at the head of the lake. The full stretch is roughly six kilometres, and on a relaxed pace it takes a little over an hour, with only gentle slopes. That makes it one of the most accessible walks in the area, suitable for families, strollers, and anyone who wants scenery without effort. The path stays close to the water for most of the way, so the views over the lake and the mountains on the French side are with you throughout.

Lake Geneva, with the Alps rising behind it, frames the walk, and Geneva’s sheltered northeastern shore gives Montreux its nickname as part of the Swiss Riviera. Because the shore faces south and is sheltered by the mountains behind, the climate is mild enough for palms, magnolias, and flowerbeds to flourish along the quay. The lakeside is lined with gardens, benches, and sculptures, and the promenade is a place where locals go for a morning jog or an evening stroll. At the Place du Marché, a bronze statue of Freddie Mercury looks out over the water, a popular photo stop that connects the walk to the town’s musical identity and to the Montreux Jazz Festival held each July.

Château de Chillon is the highlight of the walk, and by common reckoning one of Switzerland’s most visited castles. It sits on a rocky islet close to the shore and is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, with a long history as a stronghold of the Counts of Savoy. Lord Byron wrote "The Prisoner of Chillon" after visiting in 1816, and the castle inspired other writers and painters, including Rousseau and Victor Hugo, who are associated with the region’s literary reputation. Entry to the castle is ticketed, but the exterior views from the path are free and remain impressive from several angles along the walk.

The route continues to Villeneuve, a small lakeside town with an old centre and a modest harbour, where you can stop for lunch or coffee and then return by train or by boat. Lake steamers run between the towns, so you can combine the walk with a short cruise on the way back. The route is also close to Vernex Park and to the hillside Vineyards of Montreux, and the Lavaux terraces lie a short train ride away.

This walk suits first-time visitors, slow travellers, photographers, and anyone who wants a gentle introduction to the Lake Geneva shoreline. Go early or toward sunset for softer light and fewer people, and check boat and train timetables if you want to return a different way.
