Château de Chillon

Medieval lakeside castle with towers, dungeons, and Alpine views

Lake Geneva region Top 7 destination

Château de Chillon stands on a rocky islet attached to the shore, at a spot where the road between the Rhône valley and the Alpine passes squeezed between the lake and the mountains. That position made it a sentinel over the lake and the passes, and it was first mentioned in the written record in the 12th century. Over the centuries it was expanded and fortified by the Counts of Savoy, who used it both as a strong point and as a comfortable residence, and its present form owes much to the work of the 13th century.

History and Heritage The castle’s past includes periods as a fortress, a prison and a noble residence. Its dungeons held political prisoners, most famously François Bonivard, a Genevan monk imprisoned for his opposition to the Duke of Savoy in the 1530s, whose story inspired Lord Byron’s poem “The Prisoner of Chillon”, written in 1816. Byron’s name is said to be carved into a pillar of the dungeon, and the signature is a favourite stop. Bern took the castle in 1536, and later the Vaud authorities used it as an arsenal and a prison until it became a museum. The architecture combines Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance features, visible in the towers, halls and courtyards, and guided or self-guided routes lead through the banquet halls, the chapel, bedrooms, latrines and the keep.

Main Attractions Château de Chillon’s highlights include the atmospheric underground rooms, the lakeside ramparts and the views from the towers over the water and the Alps. The museum features exhibitions on daily life in the Middle Ages, weapons and the history of the Savoy dynasty. Special events such as medieval festivals, workshops and Swiss Castles Day bring the history to life for visitors of all ages, and the Septième Musicales concert series uses the halls as a venue for music. The setting makes it a favourite for photography and romantic walks.

Activities Beyond exploring the castle, visitors can enjoy lakeside picnics, boat cruises and the promenade from Montreux to Chillon, which runs along the shore past gardens and villas. The town of Montreux offers more restaurants, cafés and cultural events, and the castle also hosts educational workshops, guided tours and seasonal programmes. The shore of Lake Geneva around Chillon is mild enough for vines and palms, and the walk from Montreux gives a good view of the castle from the water side.

Getting There The castle can be reached by train to Veytaux-Chillon station, by boat from Montreux and Lausanne, by bus, or on foot along the lakeside promenade from Montreux, a walk of about 45 minutes. Parking is available nearby for those who drive. The castle is open all year, with longer hours in summer and special programmes during holidays and festivals.

Seasonal Advice April to October is the pleasantest period, when the weather is warm and the lake and gardens are at their best. Summer offers warm temperatures and lively events, while spring and autumn provide fewer visitors and colourful scenery. Winter is quieter, and the interiors are a warm retreat from the cold. In any season Château de Chillon’s mix of history, architecture and setting makes a rewarding Swiss visit. Chillon is regularly counted among Switzerland’s most visited historic sites, and an early start on a weekday gives the quietest hours inside the halls.
