Fortress Of Bellinzona

The Fortress of Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, stands as one of the most remarkable examples of medieval fortified architecture in the Alpine region. Located in the heart of Bellinzona, the complex consists of three distinct castles—Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro—connected by ancient walls and defensive ramparts. Castelgrande, perched on a hill that has seen continuous settlement for over 6,000 years, forms the centerpiece, while Montebello rises above it and Sasso Corbaro occupies a commanding position on “Raven Rock,” showcasing Sforza-era military design.

Visitors can explore the castles’ towers, courtyards, and museums, which reveal the evolution of defensive strategies and daily life in this strategic Alpine corridor. The fortress is open from April to October between 10:00 and 18:00, and from November to March between 10:30 and 16:00 (with only Castelgrande’s interior accessible in winter; the other castles’ courtyards remain open). Admission options range from single-castle tickets (CHF 10–15 for adults) to a comprehensive Fortezza Pass (CHF 28 for adults), granting access to all three castles and their exhibitions.
