Carasc Tibetan Bridge

The Carasc Tibetan Bridge is a long pedestrian suspension bridge in the hills behind Bellinzona, in southern Ticino. It spans a deep gorge between the villages of Monte Carasso and Sementina, and is among the longest bridges of its type in Switzerland. The structure is around 270 metres long and hangs high above the bottom of the ravine, with a drop of around 130 metres at its deepest point. It is about one metre wide, with a narrow deck that sways a little underfoot, and walkers are secured on both sides by railings and mesh. The experience is more dramatic than technical: you cross slowly with the valley opening below and the Ticino mountains in the distance.

The bridge was built to connect the walking networks on either side of the gorge, rather than as a stunt. On the Monte Carasso side, it ties into the hamlet of Curzùtt, a small cluster of old stone houses above the town that has long been a destination for walkers. From there a path links to the Via delle Vigne, a route that threads past terraced vineyards on the slope. Because it is a Tibetan-style bridge, built from steel cables and a narrow deck, it is a good fit for the steep ground, and it offers a unique way to link the two sides in a single circular hike.

A cableway runs from Monte Carasso up toward the Curzùtt and Mornera area, which puts the bridge within easy reach. From the upper station, the paths run through chestnut woods and past old stone-built villages, and the crossing takes only a few minutes at a steady pace. People with a fear of heights may find the middle section a challenge, so test your comfort at the start before committing. The bridge may close in strong wind, storms or ice, so check local information before setting out, and wear sturdy shoes.

The setting makes it well suited to a half-day trip from Bellinzona. The town’s three castles, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, lie within a short distance, as does the Bellinzona market, and the gorge walk adds a more active contrast to a day of history. In autumn, the chestnut woods show strong colour, and on clear days the views run across the valley toward the Alps.

The bridge suits hikers, photographers, families with older children and anyone seeking a safe but exciting crossing. Allow two to three hours for the crossing and the connecting trails, longer if you stop for lunch in a grotto along the way.
