Museum Villa Dei Cedri

The Museum Villa dei Cedri is the art museum of Bellinzona, set in a historic villa and a landscaped park on the edge of the old town, a short walk from the three castles. The villa gets its name from the cedar trees in its grounds, and the building and garden together make a quiet, civilised setting for a collection that is both regional and international in its outlook. The house has been used as a museum since the 1980s, and it still feels like a private residence rather than a purpose-built gallery.

The museum’s collection focuses on art from Ticino, Lombardy and Switzerland from the late 19th century to the present. It reflects the way artists in southern Switzerland were connected to northern Italy, with ideas and influence travelling across the border. The park is an attraction in its own right. A vineyard growing Merlot, the grape most closely associated with Ticino, lies in the grounds, and visitors can walk between the vines and the formal garden areas. The grounds mix several garden styles with mature trees, and there is a pleasant view over the town. The vineyard is a small, tangible reminder of the wine-growing tradition that shapes the Bellinzona area, which makes the park a fine place for a walk after the galleries.

The villa is not fully step-free, as is common with historic houses, and visitors with mobility needs should contact the museum in advance to ask about the options.
