Castello Di Montebello

Castello di Montebello stands on a hill about 90 meters above Bellinzona, offering sweeping views over the city and the surrounding landscape. Part of Bellinzona’s UNESCO-listed fortress system, Montebello is the middle of the city’s three iconic castles and is easily recognized by its well-preserved ramparts, towers, and triangular fortress layout. The oldest sections date back to the 13th and 14th centuries, originally built by the Rusca family from Como, while much of its current appearance reflects late-15th-century modifications under the Sforza rulers.

Visitors enter through a series of external courtyards and fortified gates, passing walls that once formed part of an extensive defensive network stretching to San Michele hill. Inside, the castle houses the “Archeologia Montebello” exhibition, which explores the site’s medieval history, architectural evolution, and restoration. Educational activities for schools are also organized by the Ticino Archaeological Association.

Montebello is open to visitors from early April to early November (10:00–18:00). During the winter months, only the courtyards remain accessible, as the castle’s interior is closed. The castle’s elevated position makes it a favorite for panoramic photos and a peaceful stroll away from the city center. Castello di Montebello offers a tangible connection to Ticino’s layered past, blending history, architecture, and spectacular views in one memorable visit.
