Aargau

Historic canton with castles, rivers, and vibrant towns

Aargau, one of Switzerland’s most populous and historically important cantons, is a region of rolling hills, fertile plains and winding rivers where tradition and industry sit side by side. Its name comes from the Aare River, which crosses the canton and shapes much of its landscape and history, and the Reuss and Limmat join it near Brugg before the Aare runs on to the Rhine. About 700,000 people live here, many of them in towns that remain small and walkable.

History and Heritage Aargau’s story reaches back to Roman times, when the area was a crossroads of trade and settlement, with the legionary camp of Vindonissa and the baths at Baden. Over the centuries the region became a patchwork of small states, abbeys and fortified towns, many of which still show their medieval past. The canton was formally created in 1803, and its position between Zurich, Basel and Bern has made it a centre of commerce and culture ever since. The Habsburg dynasty took its name from the Habsburg castle in Aargau, and later the area was ruled in part by Bern, which left its mark on the towns.

The capital, Aarau, is known for its well-preserved old town, with painted roof gables and historic lanes. Its cultural scene includes museums, galleries and regular festivals, among them the Aargauer Kunsthaus, a leading museum of Swiss art, and the Naturama natural history museum. Other notable towns include Baden, famous for its thermal baths and Roman heritage, and Brugg, with its riverside setting and old bridges.

Main Attractions Aargau holds some of Switzerland’s most impressive castles. Lenzburg Castle, on a hill above the town, offers interactive exhibits and wide views, while Hallwyl Castle, a water castle set on two islands near Seengen, is surrounded by walking paths. The canton is also home to the Habsburg Castle, ancestral seat of the Habsburg dynasty, and Wildegg Castle, known for its gardens and family programmes. Medieval Bremgarten, on a peninsula formed by a loop of the Reuss, and the Rhine towns of Laufenburg and Rheinfelden, each with an old bridge across the river, show a different face of the canton.

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore, from the Jurapark Aargau nature reserve to the banks of the Aare and Reuss rivers. Hallwilersee and the Klingnauer Stausee are popular for boating, swimming and birdwatching, and well-marked hiking and cycling routes connect villages, vineyards and forests, with options from easy strolls to long adventures. Thermal spas at Baden, Rheinfelden and Zurzach add a place to rest.

Activities Aargau’s varied landscape suits outdoor activities all year. In spring and summer visitors can hike, cycle and take boat tours, and autumn brings colourful leaves and harvest festivals. Towns host markets, open-air concerts and cultural events through the year. Food lovers can sample regional specialities such as the Aargau carrot cake, called Rüeblitorte, local wines and produce from farmers’ markets.

Getting There Aargau is easily reached by train and car, with frequent connections from Zurich, Basel and Bern. Aarau is a major transport hub, and local buses and trains make it easy to reach smaller towns and attractions. The canton’s compact size and efficient public transport allow convenient day trips and multi-stop itineraries.

Seasonal Advice May to September is the best period, when the weather is mild and the countryside is at its most vibrant. Spring and early summer bring flowers and good conditions for outdoor exploration, and autumn offers harvest celebrations and warm colours. Winter is quieter, with festive lights and cosy cafés in the towns. In every season Aargau’s mix of history, culture and natural beauty makes a rewarding Swiss visit and a good counterpart to the better-known cantons.
