Bremgarten Medieval Old Town

Bremgarten’s medieval old town, nestled on a peninsula formed by a bend in the Reuss River, is one of Aargau’s most atmospheric and well-preserved historic centers. Granted a town charter in the 13th century, Bremgarten flourished as a city-state and a key traffic hub thanks to its strategic location on major trade routes. Today, visitors can wander cobbled streets that wind between the upper and lower towns, each with its own distinct character.

The skyline is defined by remnants of the old city wall, including the Hexenturm and Hermannsturm towers, while the 16th-century covered wooden bridge stands as a picturesque landmark over the river. In the lower town, the church district and former convent evoke the town’s ecclesiastical past, while the upper town features the small castle (Schlössli) and Marktgasse, lined with grand facades and lively shops.

The Town Museum, located at Kornhausplatz, offers insight into Bremgarten’s heritage with exhibits on local history and daily life. It is open weekends from 14:00 to 17:00 and admission is free. Parking is available at Augraben, Herrmannsturm, or Casino.
