Schloss Hallwyl

Schloss Hallwyl stands in the canton of Aargau, beside the village of Seengen at the southern end of Lake Hallwil. It is a water castle in the strict sense: two small islands in the Aabach, the stream that leaves the lake, carry the buildings, and a moat and bridges separate them from the surrounding meadows. The castle takes its name from the noble family von Hallwyl, who held it for centuries, and it is generally counted among the finest moated castles in Switzerland.

The Lords of Hallwyl first built here in the twelfth century, and the earliest parts are stone towers on the islands that served as a refuge and a base for the family's influence in the region. Over the centuries the complex grew in stages. The family added residential wings, defensive walls and outbuildings, and later generations rebuilt rooms in the style of their time, so the castle shows medieval fortification next to Renaissance and later living quarters. One member of the family, Hans von Hallwyl, is remembered as a commander in the Swiss victory over Charles the Bold of Burgundy at the battle of Murten in 1476, and the name is well known across the country because of it.

In the twentieth century the castle came into public hands and was opened to visitors in 1925. It is now run by Museum Aargau, the cantonal organisation that also looks after other castles in the region. The rooms are furnished to show how a noble household lived across several periods, from kitchens and bedchambers to reception rooms, and the exhibitions use objects and displays to explain the family history and the building's development. The courtyards and walls can be walked at your own pace, and the water on all sides gives the visit a feeling of lightness that many drier castles lack.

The grounds are as much a part of the visit as the interior. Gardens lie beside the moat, and ducks and swans use the water. The shores of Lake Hallwil, with paths for walking and cycling, are a short distance away, and the area has swimming spots and boat hire in summer. Because the castle is in a rural landscape of fields and low hills, it is easy to build a half-day around it: a visit to the castle, a lakeside walk, then a meal in Seengen or nearby villages.

Schloss Hallwyl suits families with children, history readers and anyone who enjoys castles with a visible link to the landscape. Allow around two hours inside, longer if you walk to the lake. The castle is easiest to reach by public transport via Seon or Boniswil, with a short walk or local bus connection from the station.
