Aargau is a canton with few big mountains but a great many rivers, lakes, forests and hills, which makes it a good region for outdoor activity at a relaxed pace. It lies in the middle of northern Switzerland, between Zürich, Basel and Bern, and it is crossed by four major rivers, the Aare, the Reuss, the Limmat and the Rhine, which meet in the east of the canton. Because of this, much of the landscape is organised around water, and many of the best activities involve walking or cycling along rivers or swimming and boating in them.

Walking and hiking are the most common ways to experience the region. Marked trails cross the Jura ridges in the north and the gentle hills of the Mittelland, with routes of all lengths. The Jurapark Aargau offers hikes through orchards, beech forests and meadows, with peaks such as the Wasserflue giving views over the Aare valley and, in clear weather, the Alps. Castle trails link places such as Lenzburg, Hallwyl and Habsburg, so you can combine a walk with a history lesson. In spring, the cherry orchards of the Fricktal in the north-west are in blossom, which makes for a spectacular walk. Paths are generally well signposted, with yellow signs giving times, and public transport reaches most trailheads.

Cycling is also popular. National cycle routes follow the Aare and the Rhine, and shorter loops run through the villages and farmland, including routes that suit families and electric bikes. The terrain is mostly gentle, and the combination of riverside paths and quiet farm roads makes for pleasant riding. Mountain bikers can find trails in the Jura foothills, though they should respect walkers and local rules.

Water activities are another strength. Lake Hallwil, in the south, is a favourite for swimming, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and boat trips, with shores that are partly protected as nature reserves. The Rhine and Aare are used for swimming by experienced locals in summer, but their currents are strong and cold, so visitors should take care and follow safety advice. Kayaking and rafting trips are available on some stretches, and operators provide equipment and guides. For gentler relaxation, the thermal baths of Baden, Bad Zurzach and Rheinfelden offer a different kind of outdoor experience, with warm outdoor pools in cool weather.

In towns such as Aarau, outdoor games and guided scavenger hunts take families through the old town, mixing puzzles with local history, and these can be fun on rainy days when other outdoor plans are limited. Many of the region's outdoor options are suitable for dogs and for all ages, and some are free, while others, such as guided tours or boat hire, carry a fee.

Because Aargau is not a high mountain destination, it works throughout the year, with the best conditions from spring to autumn. Check weather and river conditions before you go, wear appropriate footwear, and carry water. The tourist office in Aarau and the websites of the Jurapark and the castles list current events, routes and guided programmes. The canton suits families, walkers, cyclists and anyone who prefers gentle landscapes.
