Saas-Fee

Car-free glacier village with year-round alpine adventure

Saas-Fee sits at 1,800 meters on a sunny terrace at the head of the Saas Valley, in the Valais Alps, with the mountains standing very close around it. Its history goes back to the Middle Ages, when it was a remote farming settlement and the glaciers that now draw visitors were simply an obstacle. Its transformation into a resort began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when mountaineers discovered the beauty of the Saas Valley, and the first road came as late as 1951, after which the village chose to keep cars out. Today it is celebrated for its car-free policy, which preserves a peaceful atmosphere and lets visitors wander lanes lined with wooden chalets and small shops.

History and Heritage The old buildings and the hut-like granaries on stone pillars show the village’s past, and the chapels along the paths above it add to the mood. Climbing history is just as present: the peaks above Saas-Fee, among them the Dom at 4,545 meters, the highest mountain lying entirely within Switzerland, and the Allalinhorn, a popular first four-thousander, drew early mountain guides. Pavilions and displays tell stories of the glaciers, and a film location of a quite different kind, a small karaoke cabin at the village entrance, recalls the 1984 Wham! video for Last Christmas, which was shot here.

Main Attractions The Saas-Fee Ski Resort is the village’s principal attraction, with more than 100 kilometres of runs and reliable snow thanks to the surrounding glaciers, and it stays open for skiing and snowboarding for much of the year, with summer skiing on the Allalin Glacier. The Alpin Express and other lifts lead to panoramic viewpoints and mountain restaurants, among them the revolving restaurant at Mittelallalin, billed as the highest in the world, where diners turn through 360 degrees of Alpine scenery. Beyond skiing, the Ice Pavilion is a must-see, with tunnels and sculptures carved deep inside the glacier, reached by the Metro Alpin, an underground funicular. The Hannig and Plattjen cable cars lead to hiking trails, mountain biking routes and picnic places. The village also has the Swiss Ski School, curling and skating rinks, a wellness centre called Aqua Allalin and a lively après-ski scene with Valais dishes.

Activities In summer Saas-Fee becomes a base for hikers and nature lovers. Trails wind through alpine meadows, past waterfalls and up to high huts such as the Britannia Hut, a classic stop for mountaineers. Guided glacier tours, via ferrata routes and adventure parks provide excitement for all ages, and the valley is known for wildflowers and for marmots and ibex that can be spotted from the paths. Events through the year range from music and food festivals to sports competitions, and the village’s commitment to sustainability, with a car-free core, renewable energy and support for local crafts, shapes the atmosphere.

Getting There Saas-Fee is reached by train to Visp and then by bus up the valley, with regular connections from Visp and Brig. Cars are left in a large terminal at the edge of the village, and visitors continue on foot or by electric taxi. The compact layout is easy to explore, and lifts lead into the surrounding mountains.

Seasonal Advice The best time depends on interests. June, July and September offer mild to warm weather for hiking, glacier tours and summer skiing, while December to April is the peak season for winter sports. Glacier skiing is possible even in summer. Spring and autumn are quieter, with fewer people and soft colours. In every season Saas-Fee’s mix of adventure, rest and alpine hospitality makes a memorable Swiss mountain stay. Saas-Fee’s cold, clear winters and bright summers suit every kind of mountain visit.

Wham! Filmed "Last Christmas" in Saas-Fee

The snowy chalet getaway in Wham!'s evergreen 1984 hit video "Last Christmas" is Saas-Fee. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley shot the video in the car-free village in 1984, arriving by a cable car that is visibly labelled "Saas-Fee" and runs from the village edge up to Felskinn. Every December, one of the world's most-streamed Christmas songs doubles as a postcard for the Pearl of the Alps.
