Crans-Montana

Sunny Valais resort for skiing, hiking, and alpine golf

Crans-Montana lies high above the Rhône Valley and is one of Switzerland’s principal year-round mountain resorts. Its origins go back to the early 20th century, when the sunny slopes and wide views began to attract visitors looking for fresh alpine air and rest. Over the decades Crans and Montana grew together, becoming a cosmopolitan destination that balances traditional Swiss hospitality with modern luxury.

History and Heritage The growth of Crans-Montana as a resort began in the early 1900s with the first hotels and the arrival of the railway in nearby Sierre, and many early guests came for health reasons, since the dry, sunny air suited those with lung disease. The area soon gained a name for its healthy climate and fine views, drawing visitors from across Europe. The resort’s profile was raised further by the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, founded in 1906, which hosts the Omega European Masters golf tournament each summer. Today Crans-Montana is known for its sporting record and for its cultural life, including music festivals, art exhibitions and gourmet events.

Main Attractions Crans-Montana’s main draw is its range of activities. In winter, the resort has over 140 kilometres of ski slopes for all levels, from beginners to experts, and the ski area reaches up to the Plaine-Morte glacier, which gives reliable snow and wide views. Away from the slopes, visitors can go snowshoeing, tobogganing and ice skating, and enjoy après-ski in stylish bars and mountain huts. Cry d’Er, a popular ski sector, is reached by cable car from Crans.

In summer Crans-Montana is a base for golfers, hikers and cyclists. The resort has several championship golf courses, among them the Severiano Ballesteros course. Hiking and biking trails run through alpine meadows, forests and lakes, with routes for families and for experienced adventurers. Lakes such as Lac Grenon and Lac de la Moubra are used for swimming, paddleboarding and picnics, and the Nine-lake Walkway links high-altitude water in a long hike.

Cultural attractions include the Fondation Suisse des Trains Miniatures, the Crans-Montana Art Museum and a lively programme of festivals, among them the Caprices Festival of electronic music and the Etoile Bella Lui winter lights festival. The shopping streets are lined with boutiques, galleries and restaurants, with everything from Swiss specialities to international dishes.

Activities Summer or winter, Crans-Montana is a true four-season destination. Winter sport enthusiasts can ski, snowboard and hike on prepared paths, while summer visitors can play golf on world-class courses, try mountain bike parks or join yoga walks and guided nature tours. The resort is also a wellness centre, with luxury spas and wellness centres for rest and recovery.

Getting There Crans-Montana is easily reached by train and funicular from Sierre, which is well linked to major Swiss cities such as Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich. From Sierre the funicular climbs directly to Montana in about 12 minutes. By car, well-kept mountain roads lead to the resort, with ample parking. The area’s public transport network makes it easy to explore the surrounding villages and attractions. The funicular station in Sierre is close to the main station, which makes the change easy.

Seasonal Advice The best time depends on interests. December to April is the season for skiing and snow sports, with January often offering the quietest slopes and the best conditions. May to September suits hiking, golf, the lakes and the festivals, with long sunny days and mild temperatures. Autumn brings colourful foliage and a quieter mood, good for wellness breaks and gourmet outings. In every season Crans-Montana’s sunny climate, fine views and varied activities make it a top Swiss destination.
