Spielboden is a mountain station above Saas-Fee, in the Valais, at about 2,450 metres, and it is one of the best places to see the high peaks around the village without climbing. Saas-Fee lies in a hanging valley surrounded by a ring of glaciated summits, among them the Dom, which at 4,545 metres is the highest mountain entirely within Switzerland. From the terrace at Spielboden, the view across the valley to the Dom, the Täschhorn and the Alphubel is unobstructed, and on clear days the great white walls and hanging glaciers seem close enough to touch. The station is reached from the village by cable car in a few minutes, and it forms the middle point of the lift system that continues to the higher areas.
In winter, Spielboden is a junction for skiers, with runs descending toward the village and slopes leading up toward the glacier area, where snow remains reliable late into the season. The slopes here are broad and suitable for intermediate skiers and families, and the terrace of the mountain restaurant fills with people at lunchtime, enjoying the sun and the view. Saas-Fee is known as a snow-sure resort, partly because of its altitude and partly because of the nearby glaciers, and skiing is possible at the top of the area even in summer.
In summer the station becomes a hiking base. Paths start at the station and lead across alpine meadows, along ridges and down toward the village, with routes of different lengths. The best-known feature is the marmot colony on the slopes below the restaurant. Marmots are large ground squirrels that live in burrows in the high pastures, and they are a typical sight in the Alps, whistling a warning when a predator approaches. Here they are used to people, and visitors can watch them at close range from a path, particularly in the morning and late afternoon when the animals are active. Feeding bags of suitable food are sold at the restaurant, and visitors are asked to follow the guidance on the signs and not to bring their own food, which can harm the animals. Marmots hibernate through the winter, from roughly October to April, so they are seen only in the warm months. Remember that they are wild animals, so keep a distance and do not try to touch them.
The restaurant at Spielboden has a large sunny terrace and serves a range of dishes, from simple mountain food to more elaborate meals, and it sometimes hosts events and evenings with music. The cable car schedule determines when it is open, so check the times before you plan, and note that lifts close for maintenance periods in spring and autumn. The location is popular in summer with families, because the marmots, the playground in the area and the gentle paths make it easy for children.
From Spielboden, further lifts lead to the Hannig area and the high Mittelallalin station, so the trip can be extended. Saas-Fee is car-free, with parking at the entrance and electric taxis in the village, and the cable car station is a short walk from the centre. The site suits families, walkers and photographers. Bring warm clothing even in summer, sun protection and binoculars, and allow two to four hours for a visit with a meal.
