The Allalinhorn is a four-thousand-metre peak in the Valais Alps above Saas-Fee, with a summit height of 4,027 metres. It is best known as one of the easiest four-thousanders in the Alps, a reputation that makes it the first high summit for many climbers. Its gentle snow slopes and the high starting point provided by the Metro Alpin funicular mean that a fit walker with a guide can reach the top in a single day, though it remains a Swiss glacier climb that demands proper equipment and experience.
The climb usually starts at the Mittelallalin station, at around 3,500 metres, which is the top of the Metro Alpin, the underground funicular from Saas-Fee. From there, the route crosses the glacier and climbs to the Feejoch, a saddle, before following a snow ridge to the summit. The ascent is mainly on snow and ice, with a moderate slope and no technical rock climbing, and takes around three hours from the station, with the descent a bit shorter. Crampons, an ice axe, a harness and rope are standard equipment, because the glacier is crevassed and the ridge can be icy, and the climb is normally done roped with a certified mountain guide. A good level of fitness and some acclimatisation to altitude are important, because even a gentle slope feels steep at 4,000 metres.
The summit is spectacular. From the top the views take in a wide arc of the high Pennine Alps, with the Dom, the Täschhorn and the Weisshorn nearby and, in the distance, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, as well as the Bernese Alps far to the north on a clear day. Looking back, you see the Fee Glacier and the village of Saas-Fee far below. Many climbers feel that the short, high-altitude route gives a taste of real mountaineering without the demands of a much longer and harder peak.
The best conditions are in the summer months, when the snow is firm and the weather is relatively stable, usually from early summer to early autumn. Start early, as the snow softens during the day and thunderstorms can build in the afternoon. Check the forecast and the state of the glacier with the mountain guides’ office, as conditions vary through the season and from year to year. Altitude sickness is a real risk for people who ascend quickly, so watch for headache, nausea and unusual tiredness, and descend if symptoms worsen.
The Allalinhorn suits first-time four-thousand-metre climbers with a guide, fit walkers and confident adventurers. Those who prefer to stay below the snow line can still enjoy the area by riding the Metro Alpin and taking the views from the top station.
