Saas-Fee lies in a high glacial basin in the canton of Valais, at the end of a side valley, and it is known as the Pearl of the Alps for the ring of peaks that stands around it. More than a dozen of the mountains around the village exceed four thousand metres, a concentration that is rare even in the Alps, and from the streets of the car-free village you look up at walls of rock and ice rising several kilometres above the houses. The village has been car-free for decades, and visitors leave their vehicles at the edge of the village, which keeps the air clean and the streets quiet.
The best known of the peaks is the Dom, which at 4,545 metres is the highest mountain located entirely within Switzerland, since the higher ones on the border are shared with Italy. It rises above the village as a huge pyramid of snow and ice. Other four-thousanders in the ring include the Täschhorn, the Lenzspitze, the Nadelhorn, the Alphubel and the Allalinhorn, one of the easiest high summits and a popular first four-thousander for beginners with a guide. Across the valley, the Weissmies and the Lagginhorn are also visible. Each peak has a different shape and character, and the Allalinhorn has its own entry in the guide.
The Fee Glacier descends toward the village from the high basin and gives the place its name in a sense, and its snout can be reached on foot in a short walk. Cable cars, the Metro Alpin underground funicular and other lifts take visitors up to high stations where the views are widest and the snow lasts all year, so there is summer skiing and a high-altitude walk on the glacier. From the viewing platforms, the full ring of peaks is visible. In summer the lower slopes have marked trails, mountain huts and alpine meadows, and in winter the terrain turns into a ski area.
The Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps and a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies in a separate region to the north and is not visible from Saas-Fee, so the two places should not be confused. The Matterhorn is also not a feature of the view from the village, though it is not far away in the next valley system. The peaks around Saas-Fee are a different, quieter range of the Pennine Alps, and many mountaineers prefer the area for exactly that reason.
The village suits hikers, climbers with guides, skiers and anyone who wants a car-free Alpine holiday. Check mountain conditions and weather, which can change quickly, and use qualified guides for glacier travel.
