Augusta Raurica

Switzerland’s largest Roman archaeological park near Basel

Augusta Raurica is a monument to Switzerland’s Roman past, the remains of a city that bustled with life nearly two thousand years ago. It was founded around 15 BC by Roman colonists and soon grew into a major settlement, reaching a population of about 20,000 at its height in the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Its position on the Rhine River made it a key centre of trade, culture and government in the Roman province of Germania Superior, and the site today lies in the municipalities of Augst and Kaiseraugst.

History and Heritage The city’s name comes from the emperor Augustus and the local Celtic tribe, the Raurici. Augusta Raurica was carefully planned, with a grid of streets, public baths, temples, a forum and residential quarters. Over the centuries the city saw periods of prosperity and decline, and invasions and disasters led to its eventual abandonment, although a fortress and later a village survived on the Rhine. Excavations began as early as the 16th century in a small way and became systematic in the 19th century, and they continue today, giving new views of daily life, building and the city’s place in the Roman Empire.

Main Attractions The archaeological park is the largest of its kind in Switzerland, with more than twenty major sites that visitors can see. The Roman Theatre is the most striking structure, seating up to 8,000 spectators and still used for performances. Visitors can walk through the remains of temples, the forum and the well-preserved amphitheatre, and see the basilica and the baths, with the hypocaust heating system visible in places. The reconstructed Roman House gives a vivid picture of home life, with authentic furniture and decoration. A well shaft and accessible sewer tunnels show Roman engineering, and a stretch of the defensive wall and a funerary monument by the old road to Vindonissa add to the list.

The Augusta Raurica Museum is a highlight, with thousands of finds from the site, including coins, pottery, tools and the large silver treasure of late antiquity, found at Kaiseraugst in 1961. The displays and interactive exhibits are engaging for all ages, and a monumental bronze model of the town helps to make sense of the ruins. The site also has an animal park, which adds a family-friendly side.

Activities Augusta Raurica offers many activities. Guided tours and workshops let guests try Roman crafts, baking and ancient games, and special events such as Roman festivals and re-enactments bring history to life through the year. The large grounds are good for self-guided exploration, with multilingual information boards at each monument. Comfortable shoes are advised, as the site covers a large area with uneven ground.

Getting There The site is easily reached from Basel, only 11 kilometres to the east of the city. Visitors can take the S1 S-Bahn from Basel to Augst station, with a short walk to the entrance. Ample parking is available for those who come by car. The park is well signposted and works well for day trips from Basel and other parts of northern Switzerland.

Seasonal Advice Late spring to early autumn, from May to October, is the best period, when the weather is mild and the outdoor ruins are most enjoyable. The summer months add special events and open-air performances in the Roman Theatre. Visitors should bring water and sun protection in warmer months, since much of the site is exposed. The museum and some indoor attractions stay open all year, which makes Augusta Raurica worth a visit in any season.

Whether a visitor is a history lover, a family looking for educational fun or simply curious about Switzerland’s ancient roots, Augusta Raurica gives a lively, hands-on look at the Roman world.
