Arlesheim

Baroque cathedral, English garden, and castle near Basel

Arlesheim lies a few kilometres south of Basel, where the Birs valley meets the first slopes of the Jura. Its origins go back to the Middle Ages, but the town flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it became the seat of the cathedral chapter for the Prince-Bishopric of Basel after the chapter left the city during the Reformation. The centrepiece is the Dom von Arlesheim, a Baroque cathedral built between 1679 and 1681, with a bright interior remodelled in the 18th century, a fine organ and acoustics that make it a venue for concerts and cultural events through the year.

History and Heritage Arlesheim’s past appears in its well-preserved old town, elegant canons’ houses around the cathedral square and the nearby Schloss Birseck, a medieval castle on a hill above the village. The town’s other great legacy is the Ermitage, Switzerland’s largest English-style landscape garden, laid out in the 1780s with winding paths, romantic ruins, grottoes and ponds. It was designed as a place of sentiment and wonder, and its mystical atmosphere has inspired poets, artists and visitors for generations. A hermit’s hut and a small chapel, part of the garden’s planned scenery, add to the effect. The English garden tradition behind it, with its taste for ruins and picturesque views, reached Switzerland rarely and nowhere on this scale.

Main Attractions The Dom von Arlesheim is a must-see for its architecture and cultural importance, and guided tours explain its history, art and role in the region. The Ermitage is equally captivating, with a mix of natural and built features that creates a magical landscape within walking distance of the station. Schloss Birseck, although partly in ruins, offers panoramic views and a glimpse of the area’s feudal past. The Forum Würth Arlesheim, a contemporary art space, presents changing exhibitions. A walking route devoted to architecture links buildings connected with Rudolf Steiner, whose ideas shaped nearby Dornach.

Activities Arlesheim offers activities for all ages. Walking and hiking trails lead from the town into the Jura, with routes for families, casual walkers and experienced hikers. The Ermitage is a fine place for picnics, photography and quiet reflection. The cultural calendar includes music festivals, art exhibitions and seasonal markets. Local cafés and restaurants serve Swiss and international dishes, and the weekly market is a pleasant way to taste regional produce. The town’s swimming pool, a nature reserve for amphibians and small caves in the surrounding hills give further outdoor options.

Getting There Arlesheim is reached by tram or train from Basel, with frequent services that make it an easy day trip. The town is also well connected by road, with parking near the centre and the main sights. Most places are within walking distance, and the compact layout invites exploring on foot.

Seasonal Advice April to October is the best period, when the Ermitage is in full leaf and the weather suits outdoor activity. Spring and early summer bring flowers and mild temperatures, and autumn offers golden foliage and a peaceful mood. Winter is quieter, with festive lights and cosy cafés in the old town. In every season Arlesheim’s mix of history, culture and natural beauty makes a rewarding Swiss visit and a fine contrast to the city next door.
