Birseck Castle stands on a rocky ridge above the town of Arlesheim, a few kilometres south of Basel, in a landscape of wooded hills, steep limestone cliffs and old gardens. It was founded in the Middle Ages, in the 13th century by the Prince-Bishops of Basel, who held large territories in the region and built the castle to guard the valley of the Birs river and the road toward the Jura. Its name, Birseck, means roughly the corner or ridge above the Birs. Over the following centuries it served as a residence, a stronghold and an administrative seat for the bishops, and later changed hands.

The castle has had several lives. During the French Revolution the bishops’ territories were occupied and the building was damaged, and in the early 19th century it passed to private owners and was restored in the romantic spirit that had become fashionable. The result is a mixture of medieval walls and towers with later Neo-Gothic and Gothic Revival additions, which gives the castle a picturesque, slightly theatrical appearance, quite different from a pure ruin. A chapel and other buildings on the site have been restored, and the castle is closely tied to the neighbouring landscape garden known as the Ermitage.

The Ermitage Arlesheim, laid out in the late 18th century, is one of the largest English-style landscape gardens in Switzerland, designed to look like a natural landscape with romantic buildings. It includes ponds, caves, rock formations, a hermit’s hut, waterfalls and shaded paths, and the castle ruins on the hill above are part of the intended view. The garden was created by a noblewoman and her cousin who wanted a place to enjoy nature in a fashionable romantic style, and it is now maintained by a foundation that cares for its paths and buildings. Walking through the garden takes you past the ponds and up to viewpoints beneath the castle, and the caves are a cool retreat in summer.

Getting there is easy. Arlesheim is on the tram and bus network of Basel, and a short walk uphill leads to the garden and the castle area. Paths are well marked and mostly easy, though some sections are steep and rocky. Visiting hours vary by season, particularly for any buildings, and some parts of the castle may not be open to the public, so check current information before you go. The castle and gardens are close to the Klingenthal-Lachmatt amphibian spawning site, which is a small nature feature of interest in spring.

The site suits families, walkers, garden lovers and history fans, and is a good half-day outing from Basel. Wear sturdy shoes, and visit in spring or autumn for the best light and fewest crowds.
