Versam is a small village in Graubünden perched on the rim of the Rhine Gorge, known in Romansh as the Ruinaulta, the most dramatic stretch of the Vorderrhein. The river that carves the canyon here is the Rhine, not the Landquart, and the scenery is among the most striking in eastern Switzerland. The gorge is often compared to the Grand Canyon of Switzerland, a comparison that exaggerates the scale but captures the effect of pale cliffs rising above a green river.
The origin of the canyon is a prehistoric catastrophe. About nine thousand years ago a huge mass of rock slid from the mountains near Flims into the valley, creating one of the largest rockslides in the Alps. The Rhine was dammed and then cut a new channel through the debris, leaving towers of white limestone and rubble that now form the walls of the gorge. Over time, forest has colonised the slopes, and the river flows below in a deep green channel with gravel banks and sandy beaches. The contrast between the white rock, dark pine and bright water is the basis of the area's beauty.
Walking is the best way to experience it. A path runs along the gorge, and the Versam-Safien railway station of the Rhaetian Railway is the starting point for the trail that leads along the Rhine through the canyon. The route goes through forest and open stretches, passing viewpoints where the cliffs rise on both sides, and it can be extended for several hours. Paths are mostly well marked but include steps, steep sections and roots, so sturdy shoes are advisable. The trail is shaded in places and cool by the river, which makes it welcome on hot days.
The river itself is another attraction. Rafting trips run through the gorge in the warmer months, and the calm, wide stretches of the Rhine are popular with canoeists. Swimming is possible at some sandy banks, but the water is cold and currents can be strong, so caution is essential.
Getting to Versam is straightforward by train on the line between Chur and Disentis, and the scenery from the carriage window is part of the experience. Allow half a day or more, and bring water and a picnic, since facilities in the gorge are limited.
