Rapperswil-Jona lies at the eastern, upper end of Lake Zurich, where the narrowing lake is crossed by a causeway and a wooden footbridge. The town’s roots stretch back to the Middle Ages, when the Counts of Rapperswil built their castle on the rocky hill, and Rapperswil’s old town and castle remain its emblems. Over the years the old lake town merged with neighbouring Jona, creating a community of about 27,000 people that is livelier and bigger than the postcard views suggest.

History and Heritage The medieval centre of Rapperswil is dominated by Schloss Rapperswil, a hilltop castle from the 13th century. Its towers and ramparts overlook the lake and the town’s rooftops, and its halls house the Polish Museum, which records the history of Polish-Swiss relations and the long years in which Polish exiles used the castle as a base. The old town is a maze of cobbled lanes, colourful facades and historic churches, among them the Parish Church of St. John. Rapperswil’s name as the town of roses is celebrated in its public rose gardens, which bloom with more than 15,000 plants of over 600 varieties each summer.

Main Attractions One of the town’s most recognisable features is the Wooden Bridge from Rapperswil to Hurden, a footbridge about 841 meters long that follows the route of a centuries-old pilgrim path across the lake and is a popular walk at sunset. The lakeside promenade is made for slow strolls, with views of water, swans and distant mountains. Families are drawn to Knies Kinderzoo, a children’s zoo with close encounters with animals and educational displays, and the Enea Tree Museum, just outside town, is a landscaped arboretum of rare and ancient trees.

Rapperswil-Jona also has its Municipal Museum, which covers local history and culture, and the Technorama science centre in Winterthur is a popular excursion for curious families. The town’s lively squares, such as the Fischmarktplatz, host markets, festivals and open-air concerts, and the Christkindlimärt Christmas market in December fills the old town with lights, food stalls and music.

The lake offers swimming, sailing, paddleboarding and boat cruises, while the surrounding hills and vineyards are crossed by hiking and cycling trails. The hamlet of Bollingen, on the shore within the municipality, gives a tranquil retreat with views across the water.

Getting There Rapperswil-Jona is reached by train, with direct connections from Zurich, St. Gallen and other Swiss cities. The journey from Zurich takes about 35 minutes, which makes it a popular day trip. Boat services on Lake Zurich call at the town, and good roads give access by car. Most attractions are within walking distance, and the lakeside setting suits exploring on foot or by bicycle.
