Küsnacht

Lakeside village with ravines, culture, and historic homes

Küsnacht, on the so-called 'Gold Coast' of Lake Zurich, combines Swiss lakeside living with a long cultural history. Its origins go back to Roman times, and over the centuries it grew from a farming and wine village into one of the most desirable residential communities in the Zurich region. Elegant villas, tree-lined avenues and well-kept gardens reflect a long reputation as a retreat for artists, thinkers and the city’s elite, and the lakeshore remains largely open to walkers.

History and Heritage Küsnacht’s history is closely tied to the growth of the Zurich area. The village is most famous as the long-time home of Carl Gustav Jung, who settled on the lake at Seestrasse in 1908 and lived there until his death in 1961. The Museum House C.G. Jung, in the house he built and in which he saw patients and wrote, offers a rare view of his life and work, with a garden, a study and exhibitions of his drawings and writings. The novelist Thomas Mann also lived here in the 1930s, and the singer Tina Turner made the village her home for many years. The Ortsmuseum Küsnacht, in a historic building, shows local history, art and traditions, tracing the community from its farming roots to its modern character.

Main Attractions The Küsnachter Tobel is one of the village’s natural highlights, a deep ravine carved by the Küsnachter Dorfbach stream, with dense forest, small waterfalls and a network of walking trails. It is especially attractive in spring and autumn, when the foliage changes, and it gives shade on hot days. The lakeside promenade is made for slow walks and cycling, with views of the water and the distant Alps. The village centre has cafés, small shops and local markets, and the nearby paragliding school gives a different view of the landscape.

Küsnacht’s closeness to Zurich lets visitors combine lakeside rest with museums, galleries and historic sights in the city. The village is also a gateway to hiking and cycling routes through the hills of the Pfannenstiel and the vineyards above the lake.

Activities Outdoor activities are central to life here. The Tobel trail is a favourite for hikers and families, while the lake offers swimming, sailing, paddleboarding and picnicking along its banks. Cycling routes connect Küsnacht to neighbouring lake towns and viewpoints, and parks and green spaces invite quiet time. The cultural calendar includes exhibitions, concerts and seasonal festivals. Evenings by the lake are the best hour, with swimmers, rowers and walkers sharing the shore, and small producers on the slopes above the village sell their own wine.

Getting There Küsnacht is easily reached by train from Zurich’s main station, with frequent S-Bahn services that take about 15 minutes. The village is well connected by road and by boat, with regular ferry services to other lakeside communities. Most attractions are within walking or cycling distance, and the compact layout invites exploring on foot.

Seasonal Advice Late June to early September is the best period, when the weather is warm and the lake at its most inviting. Spring and autumn offer milder temperatures, colourful landscapes and fewer visitors, good for hiking and cultural outings. Winter is quieter, with cosy cafés and festive lights in the village centre. In every season Küsnacht’s mix of natural beauty, history and Swiss hospitality makes a worthwhile visit.
