The Küsnachter Tobel is a wooded ravine that runs from the slopes of the Pfannenstiel ridge down to the village of Küsnacht, on the eastern shore of Lake Zurich. A tobel in Swiss German is a steep, narrow stream valley cut into a hillside, and this one has been formed by the Küsnachter Dorfbach, the village stream, which has carved a deep channel through the soft rock and gravel of the hill over thousands of years. The hill itself, the Pfannenstiel, is a ridge of sandstone and conglomerate laid down in the geological period when the Alps were rising, and later shaped by the glaciers of the ice ages.
The ravine has a long history of human use. For centuries the stream powered mills and workshops, and the narrow valley, with its steep slopes and constant fall of water, was a natural source of energy. Traces of this industrial past remain in old channels and building foundations, and some historic mill buildings can still be seen near the lower part of the valley. Today the setting is peaceful. The stream runs between steep banks of moss, fern and tree roots, and the forest closes overhead, so the Tobel is cool even on hot days.
A footpath follows the stream and climbs gently through the woods, with bridges and steps in places. It leads upward toward the Pfannenstiel and to the village of Forch, so it can be used as part of a longer hike, and downstream it leads to Küsnacht’s village centre and the lake. The path is shaded and relatively easy but can be damp and slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes are advisable. In spring the woodland floor is full of wild garlic and other spring flowers, while in autumn the beech and maple leaves turn gold. Heavy rain makes the stream rise quickly, and the area around it may be temporarily closed, so take notice of signs and warnings.
Küsnacht is a pleasant lakeside community, and a visit to the Tobel combines naturally with a stroll to the lake or a look at the village’s local museum, the Ortsmuseum, which covers the history of the area. The village is also known for its association with the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung, who lived and worked there, and the Museum Haus C.G. Jung is close by. Check opening times for those museums separately.
The Tobel suits walkers who want an easy and atmospheric woodland walk close to Zurich, families with children who like streams and bridges, and anyone interested in geology or local history. The suburban train from Zurich reaches Küsnacht in about twenty minutes, so it is easy to visit without a car.
