Lake Zurich Shore (Rapperswil-Jona)

Rapperswil-Jona, one of Switzerland’s best-known lakeside towns, sits on the northern edge of the narrow neck of land that divides Lake Zurich into two parts. The upper basin, known as the Obersee, lies to the east, and the longer, busier stretch toward the city of Zurich lies to the west. That position gives the shoreline in Rapperswil-Jona a different feel from the urban waterfront in Zurich itself: it is quieter, greener and framed by wetlands, hills and the castle on its rocky rise. On clear days the lake is backed by the line of the Alps, and the mountains of the Glarus and Schwyz regions rise in layers on the far side.

The shore walk begins near the harbour and the railway station, then follows the quay past benches, lawns and small piers. Boats of the Lake Zurich shipping company stop here on the way to Zurich and to other lakeside towns, and short sightseeing trips make the shoreline a base for a day by the water. The path is flat and wide, so it works for strollers, wheelchairs, joggers and cyclists, and there are cafés and ice cream stands at several points. For a quieter walk, go on toward the park areas where lawns come down to the edge of the lake.

Rapperswil’s headline feature on the water is the wooden footbridge across the lake toward Hurden, on the Schwyz side. The crossing runs beside the old Seedamm causeway, and a walk along it gives a very different view back to Rapperswil, with the old town and Schloss rising above the water. The bridge is rebuilt in modern times on the line of a very old crossing, and it counts among the longest pedestrian bridges in Swiss lakeland. The wetlands beside the causeway shelter reeds and water birds, and the Hurden side offers a ferry-free route into the Schwyz countryside and its small restaurants.

In summer, people swim from the lakeside, sunbathe on the lawns and picnic near the water. The shore is within walking distance of other sights listed for Rapperswil-Jona, including the old town, the rose gardens, Knies Kinderzoo and the Enea Tree Museum. For a similar, more promenade-style view, the Lake Riviera Promenade along the quay shows the same lake in a more manicured setting. Take the walk early in the morning for calm water and soft light, or in the evening when the old town lights the water.

This stretch of shore suits families, slow walkers, cyclists and anyone looking for a restful lakeside stop within easy reach of Zurich. It makes an easy half-day outing by train or boat, and it rewards a slow pace.
