Brig, often called the 'Pearl of the Alps,' is a town where Swiss tradition meets alpine travel. Its history stretches back to Roman times, but Brig truly flourished in the 17th century under the influence of Kaspar Stockalper, a wealthy merchant who built the Stockalper Castle. The castle, with its three distinctive onion-domed towers, is a statement of Brig’s importance as a trading centre on the route between northern and southern Europe.
History and Heritage The old town of Brig is a pleasure to explore, with cobbled streets, colourful facades and historic churches, among them the small Sebastian Chapel. The Stockalper Castle is the town’s main monument, with guided tours, exhibitions and a quiet garden courtyard. The World Nature Forum, the visitor centre for the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers interactive displays on glaciers, geology and the natural history of the region. Brig’s position at the foot of the Simplon Pass made it a crossroads for merchants, pilgrims and armies, and its heritage shows in local museums and architecture. Kaspar Stockalper (1609 to 1691) built a fortune on trade over the Simplon Pass, in salt, cloth and military supply, and the palace he completed in the 1670s is often described as the largest private baroque building in Switzerland. Its three towers are traditionally linked to the three Magi, and the arcaded inner courtyard is a calm place to rest. The Simplon road, built under Napoleon in the early 19th century, and the Simplon railway tunnel, opened in 1906, kept the town on the main route to Italy.
Main Attractions Beyond the castle, the Brigerbad thermal baths are among the largest open-air thermal baths in the Alps, with pools, slides and wellness facilities. Word of mouth keeps them busy through winter. The town’s markets and festivals show off Valaisan culture, food and wine. The Rosswald cable car lifts visitors to panoramic hiking trails and ski slopes, and from nearby Fiesch the Eggishorn cable car gives access to views of the Aletsch Glacier.
Activities Brig suits outdoor visitors all year. In summer, hiking, mountain biking and mountaineering are popular, with trails into the surrounding Alps and the UNESCO-listed Aletsch region. The Rhône River offers fishing and riverside walks. In winter Brig works as a base for skiing and snowboarding in nearby resorts, as well as snowshoeing and winter hiking. Its central location also makes scenic train journeys easy, including the Glacier Express and the Lötschberg and Simplon routes.
Getting There Brig is a major rail hub, with direct trains from Zurich, Geneva, Milan and other cities. By car, the town is reached over the Simplon Pass or by the Lötschberg car train. The compact centre is best explored on foot, and local buses connect to nearby sights and trailheads.
Seasonal Advice June to August is the warmest period, with temperatures often between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius in the hills, open trails and a busy festival calendar. Spring and autumn offer quieter streets and good colours, and winter suits snow sports and evenings in alpine inns. In any season, Brig’s mix of history, culture and mountains gives a typical Swiss experience.
