Brigerbad is a thermal spa on the floor of the Rhone valley in the canton of Valais, a short distance from the town of Brig and the start of the Simplon road. The complex is built around hot springs that rise from deep within the mountains, and it is one of the largest thermal bath complexes in Switzerland, with a big open-air section that makes it a good place to swim in warm water under the sky, with the snow-covered Alps close by, a very Swiss mountain setting. The village of Brigerbad itself is small and quiet, and the spa dominates its identity.
The springs are the core of the matter. Hot water emerges at a high temperature and is cooled and filtered to supply a series of pools with different temperatures, so that visitors can move from warm to hot water in stages. The water is rich in minerals and is traditionally valued for relaxation and for relief of muscle and joint complaints, though the effect is more about rest than medicine for most guests. The pools include indoor and outdoor areas, a larger swimming area for lengths and play, smaller hot pools and a thermal cave, a dim, steamy space where the water has a natural, cave-like setting. Saunas and steam rooms are part of the offer, with separate areas for those who want a quieter or textile-free experience, and rules on clothing differ by area, so read the signs.
The setting is one of the best features. From the outdoor pools you see the mountains rising on both sides of the valley, and in winter you can float in warm water while snow falls or lies on the slopes, a particularly striking contrast. In summer, the pools are an easy way to cool down and rest after a day of hiking. The spa has a restaurant and a café, and a day usually passes quickly, so many visitors stay for several hours.
Brig itself is worth a visit, and the Stockalper Palace, the grand 17th-century home of a merchant who controlled much of the Simplon trade, is the main sight in the town, along with the Sebastian Chapel. Brigerbad is reached by train to Brig and a short bus or taxi journey, or by car, with parking at the baths. Opening times and ticket prices vary by season, so check the current information before you go, and note that popular days can be busy.
The spa suits families, couples, hikers who want to relax after a day on the trail and anyone looking for a warm winter day out. A visit can be combined with the town of Brig and the Simplon area.
