Hofstetten is a small village on a sunny shelf above the eastern end of Lake Brienz, in the Bernese Oberland, and it is best known for what lies just outside it: the Ballenberg Swiss Open-Air Museum. The village sits between the lake shore town of Brienz and the Haslital, and its meadows and orchards look across the water to the steep slopes of the Brienzer Rothorn range. Much of the area keeps a quiet, rural character, despite the proximity of one of the country's most visited cultural sites.
Ballenberg occupies a large wooded area of hills and fields and gathers more than a hundred historic buildings from every part of Switzerland. Farmhouses, barns, granaries, a village school, workshops and chapels were taken apart in their home regions, moved here and rebuilt, so that visitors walk from the architecture of the Valais to that of Appenzell and Ticino within a single afternoon. Many houses have furnished interiors showing how families lived, with the kitchen, the stove, the beds and the tools that belonged to different periods. Rooms are warm with the smell of old timber, and the differences in building methods from region to region are easy to see.
Demonstrations bring the museum to life. Craftspeople show woodcarving, blacksmithing, weaving, baking and cheesemaking, and visitors can watch them work and sometimes buy the results. Farm animals of traditional Swiss breeds graze in fields and stalls, and gardens are planted with the vegetables and herbs once grown on mountain farms. Special events, including a market in autumn, follow the rhythm of the rural year. The museum is open from spring to late autumn, and the grounds are large enough that a full day is not too much.
The wider area has plenty of other attractions. Brienz is famous for its woodcarving tradition and for the steam cog railway that climbs the Brienzer Rothorn, while the lake offers boat trips and swimming in summer. The turquoise water of Lake Brienz and the tall waterfalls of the Giessbach on its northern shore are within easy reach.
Hofstetten works as a quiet base. Paths lead through meadows and woodland, and the lake is a short distance below. Check museum opening dates and ticket arrangements before you plan, because they depend on the season, and allow time for a long, leisurely visit.
