Bachalpsee is a stunning alpine lake situated high above the village of Grindelwald in Switzerland’s Jungfrau region. Renowned for its striking turquoise waters and mirror-like reflections of the Schreckhorn, Finsteraarhorn and Wetterhorn, it offers one of the most iconic views in the Swiss Alps. The lake sits at an elevation of approximately 2,265 meters, providing a serene escape from the bustling valleys below.
Accessing Bachalpsee typically begins at the Grindelwald Firstbahn gondola station, located in the village center near the main train station. Visitors take the gondola up to the First plateau, where the hiking trail to the lake starts. The hike is easy, covering about three kilometres one way on a well-made path with a gentle climb through alpine meadows, and takes about an hour.
Once at the lake, visitors can enjoy a peaceful walk around the perimeter, which takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The area is free to enter, making it an accessible natural attraction for all travelers. There are no opening hours for the lake itself, but the trail is usually free of snow only from about June to October, and there are no facilities at the lake. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the snow has melted, revealing the vibrant colors of the water and the surrounding wildflowers.
The cultural significance of Bachalpsee lies in its role as a classic destination for hikers and photographers seeking to capture the grandeur of the Bernese Oberland. It represents the quintessential Swiss alpine experience, combining natural beauty with accessible adventure. Visitors often spend several hours here, enjoying the fresh mountain air and the breathtaking panoramic views that define this part of Switzerland.
