Glacier Canyon (Gletscherschlucht) in Grindelwald, Switzerland, offers a unique geological adventure within the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage region. Carved over thousands of years by the Lower Grindelwald Glacier and the Lütschine river, the gorge is a narrow cleft between towering, glacier-polished rock walls. Visitors can explore approximately one kilometer into the canyon via secured wooden walkways, tunnels, and footbridges, a journey that typically takes one to two hours.
The site includes informative boards detailing local geology and myths, providing cultural context to the natural surroundings. A highlight of the experience is the Spiderweb, a large net suspended above the rushing stream. This structure allows guests to walk across the canyon, offering an adrenaline-pumping perspective suitable for all ages, though it requires a sense of balance and courage. Additional activities such as the Canyon Swing are also available.
The canyon is open in the warmer months, roughly from May to October, and makes a good outing even on a rainy day. It is cool and damp inside the gorge, so bring a warm layer and wear sturdy, non-slip shoes for the wet walkways. The entrance lies just below Grindelwald village and can be reached on foot or by local bus; an entrance fee is charged.
