Zurich Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Hours & Best Markets

Station market, Singing Christmas Tree, Niederdorf, Münsterhof and Bellevue Noël: 2026 dates and hours

By Sabine Keller 11 min read

Zurich's Christmas markets open on Thursday 19 November 2026 and run until 23 or 24 December 2026, depending on the market. Most open at 11:00 and close between 20:00 and 22:00. The same evening, at 18:00, the Lucy lights on Bahnhofstrasse are switched on for the season. The city has no single main market. Instead there are half a dozen, all within a 20-minute walk of each other: the indoor market in the main station hall, the Singing Christmas Tree on Werdmühleplatz, the Dörfli in the Niederdorf, Münsterhof, the new Bellevue Noël on Sechseläutenplatz and the Weihnachtsallee on Europaallee.

This guide goes through each one with its 2026 dates and opening hours, then covers the lights, the children's tram, the lantern float on the Limmat and the markets a short train ride away.

When are the Zurich Christmas markets in 2026?

Here are the 2026 dates at a glance, as published by Zürich Tourism and the market organisers:

  • Polarzauber, Zurich main station: 19 November to 24 December
  • Singing Christmas Tree, Werdmühleplatz: 19 November to 23 December
  • Dörfli, Niederdorf: 19 November to 23 December
  • Münsterhof: 19 November to 24 December
  • Bellevue Noël, Sechseläutenplatz: 19 November to 23 December
  • Zürcher Weihnachtsallee, Europaallee: 19 November to 23 December

All of them are closed on Christmas Day. If you are in Zurich on 24 December, only the station market and Münsterhof are open, and the station market closes early.

Polarzauber: the market in the main station

The concourse of Zurich main station (Hauptbahnhof, HB) has held a Christmas market every Advent since 1994. For years it was known as the Christkindlimarkt. Since 2025 it has run under a new name, Polarzauber, with a polar-lights theme. The landmark is still the large Christmas tree in the middle of the hall; in 2026 it is the Lindt Christmas tree, hung with Lindor truffles and set in a miniature winter scene with a teddy-bear train.

Zürich Tourism counts more than 100 stalls. Expect gifts such as scented candles, local jewellery and ceramics, and a long list of food: fondue, mulled wine and crêpes alongside dumplings, Thai dishes, hand-pulled noodles and empanadas. Because it is indoors, it is the one market you can visit in heavy rain without getting wet, and it is right where your train arrives.

Practical info: Main station concourse. 19 November to 24 December 2026. Non-food stalls: Sunday to Wednesday 11:00 to 21:00, Thursday to Saturday 11:00 to 22:00. Food and take-away: Sunday to Wednesday 11:00 to 22:00, Thursday to Saturday 11:00 to 23:00. Bars stay open until 23:30 at the latest from Thursday to Saturday. On 24 December the market is open 11:00 to 16:00.

The Singing Christmas Tree on Werdmühleplatz

A few minutes' walk from the station, just off Bahnhofstrasse, Werdmühleplatz has a market built around a stage shaped like a giant Christmas tree. Choirs stand on its tiers and sing carols every day of the market. The organisers say more than 40 choirs take part in 2026, school and children's choirs among them, and the concerts are free.

Each performance lasts about 25 to 30 minutes. The rest of the square has market stalls with locally produced and organic food and drink.

Practical info: Werdmühleplatz. 19 November to 23 December 2026. Market: Monday to Thursday 16:00 to 21:00, Friday 16:00 to 22:00, Saturday 13:00 to 22:00, Sunday 13:00 to 21:00. Choir performances: Monday to Thursday at 17:30 and 18:30; Friday at 17:30, 18:30 and 19:30; Saturday and Sunday at 14:30, 15:30, 17:30 and 18:30. On Saturdays there is a Christmas party from 20:00 to 21:00.

When do the Zurich Christmas lights go on?

The lights are switched on for the first time at 18:00 on 19 November 2026, the second-to-last Thursday of November, and stay up until 4 January 2027. The best known are "Lucy" on Bahnhofstrasse: 11,550 light crystals hung over about a kilometre of the street. Crowds gather on the evening of the switch-on, which marks the start of Advent in the city.

Lucy is not the only display. Rennweg, a quieter street off Bahnhofstrasse, has lights that look like falling snow. In the Neumarkt area of the old town, small coloured lights hang over Rindermarkt, Spiegelgasse, Predigergasse, Froschaugasse and Brunngasse. Löwenplatz has stars made from recycled PET bottles, and on Paradeplatz a large tree stands in front of the lit façade of the Credit Suisse building. A walk from the station down Bahnhofstrasse to Paradeplatz and then across to the Niederdorf covers most of them.

The Dörfli in the Niederdorf

Zürich Tourism calls the Dörfli the city's oldest Christmas market. It fills Niederdorfstrasse, the narrow pedestrian street that runs through the old town on the east bank of the Limmat, and spills onto Hirschenplatz. The organisers count about 70 decorated market huts, and the street's own shops, more than 200 of them, stay open too.

On Rosenhof, a small square off Niederdorfstrasse, there is an ice rink for children. Skating is free, and skates can be rented for a small fee. This is the best market for an evening walk: start at the Central end and work south towards the Grossmünster.

Practical info: Niederdorfstrasse and Hirschenplatz, old town. 19 November to 23 December 2026. Monday to Thursday 11:00 to 21:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00, Sunday 11:00 to 20:00.

Münsterhof: products from Zurich

Across the river, Münsterhof is the square in front of the Fraumünster church, framed by old guild houses. Its market runs under the motto "From Zurich for Zurich": the stalls are run by local shops, boutiques and Zurich brands rather than travelling traders. There is a culture tent with live music, readings and workshops, and historical guided tours on the theme of the square.

The market makes a point of sustainability: reusable tableware, green electricity, recycling stations and stalls built from certified Swiss wood. The organisers recommend the market's own mulled wine. Some stalls take cash and others take cards only, so carry both.

Practical info: Münsterhof, about 9 minutes' walk from the main station. 19 November to 24 December 2026. Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 21:30, Sunday 11:00 to 19:30.

Bellevue Noël on Sechseläutenplatz

The big square between Bellevue and the Opera House used to host the Wienachtsdorf ("Christmas village"). Its successor is Bellevue Noël, which runs from 19 November to 23 December 2026. Its centrepiece is a 50-metre-wide Christmas wreath built from Swiss wood that you can walk around on, about five metres above the ground. Access is free but you need a ticket, which you can book online in advance or get at the market. There is a lift as well as stairs, so the wreath is wheelchair accessible.

Below the wreath there are about 100 stalls with an emphasis on local and sustainable products, food stands, and a fondue chalet that seats up to 400 people. On Sundays there is a candle ritual.

Practical info: Sechseläutenplatz, next to the Opera House at Bellevue. 19 November to 23 December 2026. Opening hours for 2026 had not been published when this guide was written; check the Bellevue Noël website before you go. Book a fondue table in advance for weekend evenings.

Zürcher Weihnachtsallee on Europaallee

The newest district next to the main station has its own market on Europaallee, on the south side of the tracks. About 80 stallholders take part, and they change every week, so a return visit will look different. There is food from around the world, design and craft stalls, a domed mulled-wine bar, a fondue chalet and a karaoke bar. Payment is largely cashless.

Practical info: Europaallee, about 5 minutes' walk from the main station. Opens Thursday 19 November 2026 at 16:00 and runs until 23 December. Market: Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 22:00, Sunday 11:00 to 20:00. The fondue chalet is open daily 11:00 to midnight.

Christmas in Zurich with children

  • The Märlitram: a decorated tram driven by Santa, with two angels reading Christmas stories to the passengers. It leaves from Bellevue and is for children aged 4 to 9 only; the stories are in German. Tickets for the 2026 season go on sale online from 13 November and can also be collected at Coop City stores (St. Annahof, Bellevue, Sihlcity, Oerlikon) or at the Visitor Information desk at the main station. The 2026 running dates had not been published when this guide was written.
  • Ice rink at Rosenhof: free skating for children at the Dörfli market.
  • Singing Christmas Tree: many of the choirs are children's choirs, and the weekend afternoon concerts at 14:30 and 15:30 suit families.

Lichterschwimmen: lanterns on the Limmat

On 17 December 2026 at 18:00, hundreds of small lanterns are launched from Stadthausquai and float down the Limmat. Schoolchildren from the canton of Zurich make the lanterns and set them on the water. It is organised by Zürich Tourism with the city's school department. Watch from the bridges or from Weinplatz, where hot drinks and sweets are served. The launch starts on time, so arrive a little early.

If the weather turns

The station market is fully indoors, and the Bellevue Noël and Weihnachtsallee fondue chalets are heated and covered. Two other options run through Advent:

  • Illuminarium in the courtyard of the Swiss National Museum, right behind the main station, combines light installations, music and food from 5 November to 30 December 2026.
  • Winterzauber Uetliberg, on Zurich's local mountain, has lights, stalls, candle-making and curling from 6 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. The train to the Uetliberg leaves from the main station.

Other Christmas markets near Zurich

Tips for visiting

  • Best time: Weekday afternoons are the quietest. The station market and Werdmühleplatz are busiest after work, from about 17:00. Saturdays are crowded everywhere.
  • A route for one evening: Start at the station market, walk down Bahnhofstrasse under the Lucy lights to Werdmühleplatz for a concert, continue to Münsterhof, cross the Limmat to the Niederdorf and finish at Sechseläutenplatz. Without stops this takes under an hour.
  • Getting there: Zurich Airport has frequent trains to the main station. All the markets are within walking distance of the station or a few tram stops away.
  • Payment: Switzerland uses Swiss francs, and many stalls are cashless. Carry a card and some cash.
  • Information: The Visitor Information office in the main station is open Monday to Saturday 8:30 to 19:00 and Sunday 9:00 to 18:00.
  • Dates: The 2026 dates and hours above come from Zürich Tourism and the market organisers' websites. Check them again before you travel, as details can change.
