Uetliberg

Uetliberg is the long, wooded ridge that rises directly behind Zurich, and for the people of the city it is simply the mountain. At 871 metres it is not high by Swiss standards, but its position makes it special: the ridge stands about 450 metres above the lake and gives a view that takes in the whole city, the shining surface of Lake Zurich and, on a clear day, a line of snow-covered Alps along the southern horizon. The Uetliberg is the northern end of the Albis chain, which runs south-west toward Zug, and the forests along the ridge form one of the largest areas of woodland near the city.

The mountain has been a favourite excursion for a very long time. A railway line from the city opened in the nineteenth century and has carried generations of Zurich families to the summit, where an observation tower, a hotel and restaurants wait. Today the same line, part of the suburban network, climbs from the main station in around twenty minutes. Many residents prefer to walk, taking the trails that climb from the city districts through beech woods, and the mountain is also popular with runners and mountain bikers. A broadcasting tower stands near the summit, a reminder that the ridge also has a practical role for the city.

A network of footpaths runs along the ridge and down both flanks. The Planet Trail follows the crest and shows the solar system at a reduced scale, with markers set along the way for each planet, which makes a good family walk. Other paths lead down to the Sihl valley, to Felsenegg with its cable car to Adliswil, and into the forest reserves on the slope. In winter, when snow lies on the hill, walkers and sledgers use the ridge, and on foggy days the summit often rises into bright sunshine above a sea of cloud, a sight that draws many people up.

The summit area has places to eat and drink, and the views from the tower and the terraces are the main reward. There is no entry fee for the mountain itself, and public transport on the railway is covered by the Zürich Card. Weather can change quickly, and fog may hide the view, so checking the forecast or webcam helps.

Bring sturdy shoes, because the paths are steep and can be muddy, and a warm layer for the summit.
