Basel Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Hours & What to See

Barfüsserplatz, Münsterplatz, the Märliwald and the Adväntsgass: 2026 dates and how to visit

By Clara Roth 9 min read

The Basel Christmas market (Basler Weihnachtsmarkt) runs from Thursday 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily from 11:00 to 20:30, on two squares in the old town: Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz. On the last day, 23 December, Barfüsserplatz closes at 20:00 and Münsterplatz at 18:00. Alongside the two squares there is a children's area on Münsterplatz (the Märliwald), a food and drink area on Claraplatz across the Rhine, and, a few streets away on Rheingasse, the evening Adväntsgass. The city's tourism office calls Basel Switzerland's most traditional Christmas city, and in 2021 the European Best Destinations ranking named its market the best in Europe.

It is a compact market: you can walk from one square to the other in a few minutes and see both in an evening. That makes it a good choice for a short trip, or for a stop on the way to the Alps. This guide covers each part of the market, the opening hours and how to get there.

Barfüsserplatz: the main market

Barfüsserplatz, known locally as "Barfi", is the larger of the two squares and the busier one. The stalls are set out around the Barfüsserkirche, the former Franciscan church that now houses part of the Historical Museum Basel. You will find Christmas tree decorations, gifts and crafts, plenty of food stands, and a stall where you can make your own candles.

Barfüsserplatz is also one of Basel's main tram hubs, which makes it the easiest place to start. Expect crowds at the end of the working day and on Saturday afternoons.

Practical info: Barfüsserplatz, Basel old town. 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily 11:00 to 20:30 (23 December until 20:00). Trams stop on the square itself.

Münsterplatz: under the cathedral

A short walk uphill from Barfüsserplatz, Münsterplatz is the calmer and more atmospheric of the two markets. The stalls stand in front of the red sandstone Basel Minster, under the square's trees, which are hung with glowing snow globes. A large Christmas tree marks the entrance to the market; in recent years it has been decorated by Johann Wanner, the Basel Christmas-decoration maker, in cooperation with the city's Christmas association.

The stalls here sell goods as well as food and drink, and the square is the best place to visit in the late afternoon, when the light fades over the Minster and the lights come on.

Practical info: Münsterplatz, Basel old town. 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily 11:00 to 20:30 (23 December until 18:00). About five minutes on foot from Barfüsserplatz, uphill via the lanes behind the square.

The Märliwald: for children

On Münsterplatz, the Märliwald ("fairy-tale forest") is a children's and family area run by the Basel organisation Robi-Spiel-Aktionen. Children can dip candles, cast tin figures, decorate gingerbread, try blacksmithing and watch a puppet theatre. For adults there is a woodcutter's bar, the Holzfällerbar.

Practical info: Münsterplatz. 26 November to 22 December 2026. Monday to Friday 13:30 to 19:00; Saturday and Sunday 11:00 to 19:00. The Holzfällerbar is open daily 11:00 to 20:30.

Claraplatz: food and drink in Kleinbasel

Across the Rhine in Kleinbasel, the city's right-bank district, Claraplatz hosts the food and drink part of the market: cheese dishes, meat products and hot drinks. It is less of a sight than the two old-town squares, but it is useful if you are staying on that side of the river or heading to the Adväntsgass.

The Adväntsgass on Rheingasse

The Adväntsgass ("Advent lane") in Kleinbasel is a separate evening event along Rheingasse, the street that runs parallel to the river near the Mittlere Brücke. It is run by its own association and is more of a night-time gathering than a shopping market, with the street closed to traffic for the period.

Practical info: Rheingasse (numbers 1 to 88) and the adjoining part of Lindenberg, Kleinbasel. 26 November to 23 December 2026, according to the city's permit notice. Monday to Thursday 16:30 to 22:30; Friday 16:30 to 23:30; Saturday 13:30 to 23:30; Sunday 13:30 to 20:30.

Lights, Läckerli and the market mug

Basel's Christmas lights are coordinated by the Verein Basler Weihnacht, the city's Christmas association, which puts up trees and lights in the old town, including Freie Strasse, Marktplatz, Spalenberg and Schneidergasse. Walking these streets between the two markets is part of the evening.

The local Christmas biscuit is the Basler Läckerli: a hard, spiced honey biscuit with candied peel, cut into rectangles and glazed with sugar. It is sold all year in Basel but most associated with the Christmas season, and makes an easy gift to take home.

Hot drinks at the market come in a Basel Christmas market mug. Ask at the stall whether a deposit is charged and where to return the mug; otherwise it is a souvenir.

St. Nicholas Day: Santiglaus and Schmutzli

The first big date of the Basel Christmas season is 6 December, St. Nicholas Day. In German-speaking Switzerland St. Nicholas visits with his companion Schmutzli, a dark figure carrying a rod who, in the old telling, frightens children who misbehaved during the year. In Basel the saint is called the Santiglaus. Children recite a short poem (a Värsli) or sing a song for him and receive mandarins and nuts in return.

If you are in Basel that day, the Haus zum Kirschgarten, the Historical Museum Basel's house museum of 18th- and 19th-century domestic life, lists a visit from Santiglaus and Schmutzli on 6 December 2026, where visitors can recite a poem. Small Santiglaus visits also take place in the villages of the canton.

A cold afternoon: museums near the markets

The markets come alive at dusk, so a December afternoon in Basel is a good time for its museums. The Kunstmuseum Basel on St. Alban-Graben, a few minutes' walk from Barfüsserplatz, holds one of the oldest public art collections in Europe. The Historical Museum Basel occupies the Barfüsserkirche on the market square itself. Further out, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, a modern art museum in a Renzo Piano building, is reached by tram 6, and the Museum Tinguely by the Rhine shows Jean Tinguely's kinetic machine sculptures. Check each museum's hours and exhibitions before you go; several close on Mondays.

Which part of the market should you choose?

  • Only one evening: walk from Barfüsserplatz up to Münsterplatz at dusk, then down to the Rhine for the view of the lit old town from the Mittlere Brücke.
  • With children: Münsterplatz, timed for the Märliwald (from 13:30 on weekdays, 11:00 at weekends).
  • For gifts: both squares have craft stalls; Barfüsserplatz has the widest choice, and Läckerli from a Basel biscuit maker are an easy present to pack.
  • For a night out: the Adväntsgass on Rheingasse, which stays open until 23:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • On the last day, 23 December: go early. Münsterplatz closes at 18:00 and Barfüsserplatz at 20:00.

Other Swiss Christmas markets within reach

  • Zurich, about an hour away by train: the Christkindlimarkt inside Zurich main station is a large indoor market under the station roof, and in 2026 the market on Sechseläutenplatz in front of the Opera House is relaunching under a new operator as "Bellevue Noël". Reported dates are 19 November to 23 December 2026 for Bellevue Noël; the main station market's 2026 dates had not been confirmed when this guide was written. Check Zurich Tourism before you go.
  • Montreux Noël on the shore of Lake Geneva runs 20 November to 24 December 2026, with more than 150 chalets along the lakeside quays. See our separate guide to the Montreux Christmas market.

Tips for visiting

  • Best time: Weekday afternoons are the quietest. Münsterplatz is at its best just after dusk; Barfüsserplatz is at its fullest after work.
  • Route: Start at Barfüsserplatz, walk up to Münsterplatz, then down to the Rhine and across the Mittlere Brücke to Claraplatz and the Adväntsgass on Rheingasse. It is a walk of under half an hour without stops.
  • Getting there: EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, shared by Switzerland and France, is linked to Basel SBB by bus 50. Basel SBB, the main station, has direct trains from Zurich, Bern and Lucerne and from France and Germany. From the station, trams run to Barfüsserplatz in a few minutes.
  • Where to stay: The old town (Grossbasel) puts you within walking distance of both main squares. Kleinbasel, across the river, is closer to Claraplatz and the Adväntsgass.
  • Payment: Switzerland uses Swiss francs. Carry some cash in case a stall doesn't take cards.
  • Weather: December in Basel is cold and often grey, with temperatures around freezing in the evening. Dress warmly for standing outside.
  • Dates: The 2026 dates and hours above come from the canton of Basel-Stadt. Check the city's market page before you travel, as details can change.
