Wasserflue

The Wasserflue is a limestone ridge in the Aargau Jura, rising above the Aare valley to the north of Aarau, in the part of the canton that belongs to the Jurapark Aargau. In Swiss German a Flue, or Fluh, is a steep rock face or cliff, and the name fits: the hill's southern side drops sharply toward the plain, while the northern side slopes more gently into forest. It is one of the high points of this part of the Jura and a popular goal for walkers from Aarau and the surrounding villages, particularly on clear days when the view is at its best.

The Jura is a chain of folded limestone hills that runs in an arc along the north-western edge of Switzerland, and the Aargau section, known as the Tafeljura or table Jura, is lower and more gently shaped than the high folds farther west. The rock is limestone from the Jurassic period, the geological age to which the mountains give their name, and the surface is dotted with fossils, small caves and areas of dry grassland that support rare plants and insects. Beech forest covers much of the slopes, with pine and spruce in places, and the clearings are rich in wildflowers in spring and early summer.

Several trails lead to the top, starting from nearby villages and from the road over the Staffelegg pass. The ascents are moderate, with forest paths and some steeper stretches, and signposts mark the way. Most walkers take two to three hours for a round trip depending on the starting point. Near the summit, benches and open areas invite a rest, and the views extend over the Aare valley, the plain of the Mittelland and, on very clear days, the chain of the Bernese Alps along the southern horizon. In autumn the beech woods turn gold and copper, and low cloud often fills the valley while the ridge stays in the sun, creating a striking sea of fog below.

Because the ridge is exposed, weather can change quickly, and wind and cold are stronger at the top than in the valley. Good boots are advisable, especially after rain or in winter, when paths can be slippery or icy. There is no entry charge, and the trails are open at all times, but facilities on the hill are minimal, so carry water, food and a map or phone with offline maps. Respect the local wildlife and keep dogs on a leash in the breeding season, when ground-nesting birds and young animals are vulnerable.

The Wasserflue suits hikers, nature lovers and photographers, and it can be combined with other routes in the park, such as the paths to the Linner Linde or along the ridge toward neighbouring peaks. It is accessible by public transport to the trailheads, though bus services may be infrequent, so check timetables in advance. Allow a half day for the walk and more if you want to explore the ridge.
