Sentiero Degli Ulivi In Gandria
Scenic olive trail with lake views and history
The Sentiero Degli Ulivi, or Olive Tree Trail, offers a scenic and culturally rich walk along the shores of Lake Lugano between Castagnola and the picturesque village of Gandria. Stretching about 3.5 kilometers, the trail winds through Mediterranean-style landscapes, with sweeping views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Along the way, walkers pass remnants of ancient olive groves and areas where new trees have been planted, reflecting the region’s long-standing connection to olive cultivation.
Eighteen informational boards line the route, providing insights into the history, science, and traditions of olive growing in Ticino. The path is well-marked with olive tree logos and is suitable for adults and children aged 10 and up. The walk is not strenuous and typically takes one to two hours, though many visitors linger longer to enjoy the scenery or explore Gandria’s narrow lanes and lakeside grotti.
The trail is free to access and open throughout the main hiking season, generally from June to September. From Gandria, travelers can return to Lugano by boat or bus, making for a pleasant round-trip excursion. Whether you’re interested in local history, botany, or simply want to enjoy panoramic lake views, the Sentiero Degli Ulivi provides a memorable way to experience the natural and cultural heritage of the Lugano region.
