Sentiero Degli Ulivi In Gandria

The Sentiero Degli Ulivi, the Olive Tree Trail, is a short lakeside walk on the north shore of Lake Lugano that links Castagnola, on the edge of the city, with the village of Gandria. It is a path of a few kilometres, easy underfoot, and it follows the steep hillside above the water through terraces, woodland and small gardens, with the lake always visible below. The setting is distinctly Mediterranean-style: the slopes face south, the air is mild, and olive trees, figs, cypresses and palms grow alongside the chestnut and oak forest of the Ticino hills.

The trail is named for the olive trees that grew around Lake Lugano long before tourism. Olive growing was part of village life on the sunny shores of Ticino for centuries, and a large part of the old groves was later lost, with only scattered remnants left. The path was set up to remind visitors of that heritage, and along it you pass old trees and newer plantings that show the effort to bring the olive back. Information boards beside the path explain the history of olive growing in the region, how the trees are cared for and how oil is produced, making it more than a plain stroll. It is a good walk for children who like to read signs, and for anyone who enjoys a local-history angle.

Gandria’s old lanes are the reward at the end. It is one of the most photographed villages on the lake, with houses built into a steep rock face, narrow stepped lanes and arches, and a small harbour at the bottom. The village was once a smuggling and fishing community on the Italian border, and the Swiss customs museum is located close by on the water and reached by boat. Lakeside grotti and restaurants in Gandria serve Ticino dishes, with a terrace over the water, and the lanes are best explored at a relaxed pace.

Getting there is easy. From Lugano, a bus runs to Castagnola, where the path begins, and you can return from Gandria by boat or bus, which makes the outing a convenient half-day with a one-way walk. Wear shoes with grip, as steps and cobbles can be slippery after rain, and carry water in summer. The trail sits near the Monte Brè funicular and the lakefront of Lugano, so it combines well with a cruise on Lake Lugano or a visit to the nearby park.

The walk suits families, casual hikers, photographers and visitors who like landscapes with a story. It is a gentle introduction to the Lugano hills, with views of the lake, the mountains and the Italian shore.
