Monte San Salvatore is a steep, pyramid-shaped mountain on the edge of Lugano, rising to about 912 metres above the lake, which sits roughly 270 metres above sea level. Its position, between Lugano and the village of Paradiso on one side and Morcote’s peninsula on the other, makes it one of the best viewpoints in Ticino, with a panorama over Lake Lugano, the city, the hills of Italy and the Alps behind. On clear days the high Alpine peaks, including the Monte Rosa massif, can be seen in the distance.
A funicular railway runs from Paradiso to the summit. It was opened in 1890 and is still a good way up: a short ride in a small cabin that climbs steeply through the woods, with the lake appearing below. At the top, a terrace gives a close view over the water and the rooftops, and a restaurant offers Italian-influenced Ticino cooking with the same outlook. The summit also has a small church, the Chiesa di San Michele, a pilgrimage chapel with a history stretching back centuries, and a small museum about the mountain, its geology and the funicular. Check the current operating season and timetable before planning your trip, since the line runs on a schedule that changes through the year.
For hikers, the summit is the start of several routes. A well-known descent leads through woods and small villages to Morcote on the southern tip of the lake, with views changing as the path winds along the ridge, and there are also paths toward Carona and Figino. The routes are mostly well marked, but they can be steep and rocky in places, so good shoes are advised, and the descent is long enough to need a few hours. In summer the terrace is a pleasant place for a drink after the walk, and in autumn the colours across the hills are especially good.
The summit looks across to the hills of Italy, and the Italian border lies just beyond the lake. The mountain is close to the city’s other highlights. Lugano’s lakefront promenade, the old town and the boats on Lake Lugano can all be combined with a morning or afternoon on the summit, and it forms a pair with Monte Brè on the opposite side of the bay, which has a different view of the city and the lake. Many visitors do both over two days to compare the views.
Monte San Salvatore suits families, walkers, photographers and anyone wanting an easy Swiss mountain experience without long travel from the city. Go on a clear morning for the best visibility, and take a light jacket, since the summit can be cooler and windier than the lake.
