Parco Ciani

Parco Ciani is the largest public park in Lugano, running along the shore of Lake Lugano on the east side of the city centre, a short walk from the lakeside promenade. The park takes its name from the Ciani family, who developed the estate in the nineteenth century, and Villa Ciani, the neoclassical house at its centre, still bears that name. The city acquired the grounds in the early twentieth century and opened them to the public, and they have been the main place for a quiet outdoor break ever since. Locals sometimes call it the green lung of the city, an apt nickname for a park that cools the lakefront in summer.

The grounds cover roughly six hectares and are divided into two quite different areas. The part nearest the villa is laid out in a formal manner that mixes Italian and English garden styles, with trimmed lawns, flower beds, statues, fountains and large old trees, so you can follow short gravel paths from one view to the next. Benches facing the water are in demand on sunny days. The eastern section, running toward the Cassarate river, is wilder and more natural in character. Winding paths pass under oak, lime, plane and maple trees that are typical of the forests of Ticino, and the walks there offer shade and a quieter mood.

Culture sits within the park as well as around it. Villa Ciani has been used for exhibitions and events, and other buildings in the grounds include the Palazzo dei Congressi, the city's convention centre, the Cantonal Natural History Museum, and the Cantonal Library in the neighbouring area. Together they make the park a mixed space for leisure, learning and meetings, and visitors can combine a stroll with an hour in a museum.

For families there is a children's playground, and the open lawns are used for picnics and games. Joggers and cyclists use the paths in the morning, and the park is a pleasant place for reading, sketching or simply sitting by the lake with an ice cream from one of the nearby stands. In summer, concerts and other events are held on the site, and the setting against the mountains of Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore makes it a popular place for photographs.

Parco Ciani is easy to reach on foot from Piazza della Riforma, about fifteen minutes along the lakeshore, or by local bus. Entry is free and the park is open throughout the day. It suits couples, families, walkers and anyone who needs a quiet pause between the old town and a boat trip, and a visit of an hour is enough to see both sections. The best light for lake views comes in the late afternoon, and spring brings blossoms and flowering shrubs that add colour to the formal garden.
