Lugano's Lakeside Parks And Promenade

Lugano’s lakeside parks follow the shoreline of the northern bay of Lake Lugano and form a continuous green strip between the old town and the water. They are linked by a promenade that runs along the quay, so you can walk from one park to the next with the lake beside you. One of the first things you notice is the climate. It is mild enough for palms, magnolias, camellias and other plants that are unusual in Switzerland, which is why the shore has a Mediterranean look, with an Italian feel in the Ticino way of life.

The largest of these green spaces is the Parco Ciani, a landscaped park at the edge of the city, laid out in the 19th century around a villa, with mature trees, lawns and winding paths that lead down to the water. It is a favourite place for joggers and families and offers views across the lake toward Monte San Salvatore. Near the city centre is the Parco Belvedere, a smaller garden next to a grand hotel with modern sculptures set among the plants, and the Belvedere Gardens are well suited to a short break between the shops and the lake. Further along, the Parco del Tassino is a quieter park with a small animal enclosure and shaded paths, and it is a pleasant place for children.

The promenade is the thread that connects them. It is a broad pedestrian way along the quay, lined with benches, flowerbeds and old lampposts, and it passes landing stages where the lake boats leave for Gandria and Morcote. On one side lie the old town and its piazzas, on the other the water, and in good weather the whole stretch is busy with walkers, cyclists, joggers and people eating ice cream. Cafés and kiosks provide refreshments, and in the evening the lights of the opposite shore reflect on the lake. In spring and summer, concerts and festivals use some of the park spaces, so the promenade can change character from day to day.

A good way to explore is to start at the lido or the Parco Ciani at the eastern end, walk along the lake to the centre and finish in Piazza della Riforma with an aperitivo. The route is flat and takes about an hour at a gentle pace, longer if you stop in the parks. It combines well with a boat cruise, with a visit to the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura arts centre near the water and with a funicular ride up Monte San Salvatore or a bus to Monte Brè.

The parks and promenade suit couples, families, joggers and anyone who likes a relaxed lakeside stroll. They are free and open all year, with the best conditions from April to October. Early morning offers calm water and mountain reflections, while the evening is more lively.
