Les Bois is a village on the Franches-Montagnes plateau in the canton of Jura, at an altitude of about 1,000 metres, and the hills around it are a good introduction to the character of the Swiss Jura. This is not a landscape of sharp peaks and glaciers. It is a high rolling country of pastures, spruce forest and limestone, where the horizon is broad and the pace is slow. Mountains in the Jura rise in long, parallel ridges, and the plateau between them has the feel of an upland farm country.
The geology explains the look. The Jura is made of limestone laid down in ancient shallow seas, which was later pushed into long folds during the Cenozoic era as the Alps rose to the south. Water dissolves limestone, so the ground is porous, with sinkholes, caves and few surface streams, and that is why the plateau has a dry, open feeling in places, with ponds and peat bogs only where the ground is sealed by clay or peat. The landscape is a patchwork of wooded pastures, called pâturages boisés, where scattered spruce trees stand among grazing land, and dry-stone walls and farms with big sloping roofs sit in the folds.
Horses are a regional symbol. The Franches-Montagnes breed, a sturdy and gentle working horse, is raised on the pastures, and the annual horse fair at nearby Saignelégier gathers breeders and riders every August. The plateau is also a cross-country skiing area in winter, when snow lies deep and trails are groomed across the open fields.
Walking is the easiest way to enjoy the hills. Marked trails link villages, farms and viewpoints, and the gradients are moderate, which suits families and casual hikers. Paths cross open pasture, then slip into dark forest, and wide views appear unexpectedly where the trees part. The air is clear and the quiet is memorable.
The region also has a strong human history. Watchmaking grew up across the Jura arc, with La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle in neighbouring Neuchâtel among the most famous centres, and farmers once made watch parts in winter evenings in their homes. A trip to Les Bois can easily be combined with the nearby Etang de la Gruère and with Saignelégier for a full day in the Jura.
