The Jolischlucht, the Joli Gorge, is a narrow ravine in the Upper Valais, in the Swiss Alps, in the area between the villages of Raron and Niedergesteln on the sunny northern slope of the Rhone valley. A suspension footbridge across the gorge gives walkers a safe and dramatic way to cross it, high above the stream bed, with views down into the rock cleft. It belongs to the stretch of the Rhone valley near Raron, in the German-speaking part of the canton.

Raron itself is a small and interesting place. The village stands at the foot of a rock spur crowned by the Burgkirche, a hilltop church that is also known as the burial place of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who died in 1926 and was laid to rest in the churchyard according to his wish. The view from the church terrace over the Rhone valley is one of the best in the area. The Joli Gorge walk can be combined with a visit to the village, and the hiking routes in the neighbourhood link it with the Maxenhaus and with the Bietschtal, where a rope-bridge course offers a more demanding adventure.

The walk to and through the gorge follows paths on the hillside above the Rhone, crossing the dry, sun-baked slopes typical of the Valais, with views over the valley floor, the vineyards and the high mountains on the opposite side. In this region the old irrigation channels known as suonen or bisses bring meltwater from the high glaciers of the Alps to the dry fields, and traces of them can be seen along many paths. The vegetation is distinctive, with dry meadows, rock plants and pines, and in spring the slopes are covered with flowers. The suspension bridge is the highlight, a thin walkway that sways slightly when you cross, but it is designed for ordinary hikers and is safe when conditions are normal.

Walkers should check the state of the bridge and paths before setting out, as they may close for maintenance, after storms or in winter, and strong winds can make the crossing unpleasant. People with a fear of heights may prefer to avoid the bridge. Sturdy shoes, water and sun protection are needed, as the slopes are exposed in summer. The route is not long, but includes some steep sections.

The gorge suits hikers, families with older children and anyone who enjoys a mild adventure. It makes a good half-day outing from Raron or Visp and combines well with the church and Rilke’s grave.
