One-day Zermatt itinerary featuring Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glaci...
A comprehensive one-day exploration of Zermatt's highlights, focusing on the iconic Gornergrat Railway for panoramic Matterhorn views and a visit to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise for high-altitude experiences.
Morning Stroll & Breakfast
Start your day with a leisurely walk through the car-free village of Zermatt. Enjoy the fresh air and admire the traditional chalets. Grab a hearty Swiss breakfast at a local bakery or café near the station.
Gornergrat Railway Ascent
Board the historic Gornergrat Cogwheel Railway at Zermatt Station. This electric train takes you up to the summit, offering stunning views of the Matterhorn and 29 other 4,000-meter peaks. Arrive early to secure good viewing spots.
Gornergrat Summit Exploration
Explore the observatory and the viewing platforms at the summit. This is the best vantage point for photographing the Matterhorn. The air is crisp, so ensure you have a warm layer. Enjoy the panoramic view of the Gorner Glacier.
Descent to Riffelalp
Take the train down to Riffelalp station. This intermediate stop offers another excellent viewpoint of the Matterhorn from a different angle, often less crowded than the summit.
Lunch at Riffelalp
Enjoy a traditional Swiss lunch at the Café Riffelalp or Restaurant Riffelalp Resort. Try local specialties like Rösti or a fondue while enjoying mountain views.
Transfer to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
Walk from Riffelalp to the Klein Matterhorn cable car station (or take a short shuttle if available/seasonal) and board the gondola up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Europe's highest cable car station.
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise & Ice Palace
Explore the glacier plateau. Visit the Ice Palace, a tunnel carved into the glacier, and see the highest chapel in Europe. If conditions permit and you are adventurous, you can take the Skyway to the summit of the Klein Matterhorn (additional cost) for 360-degree views.
Descent to Zermatt Village
Take the cable car back down to Zermatt village. The descent offers changing landscapes from alpine rock to lush greenery.
Village Exploration & Souvenirs
Stroll through the main street of Zermatt. Browse local shops for Swiss watches, chocolate, and souvenirs. Visit the Matterhorn Museum to learn about the history of mountaineering in the region.
Dinner with a View
Enjoy a farewell dinner at a restaurant in Zermatt. Many establishments offer views of the Matterhorn illuminated at sunset. Reserve in advance as this is a popular time.
Where to stay: Stay near the Zermatt Railway Station for easy access to the Gornergrat Bahn and Glacier Paradise cable cars. The village is car-free, so all transport is by foot or electric taxi.
