One-day exploration of Val Bavona's alpine villages
A full-day immersive journey into the heart of Val Bavona. This itinerary covers the scenic drive from Locarno, the historic stone villages of Bignasco and Cavigliano, the famous waterfall at Pianscuro, and the remote hamlet of Bosco. The day balances moderate hiking with cultural exploration and relaxation.
Depart Locarno
Start your day in Locarno. Take the post bus (Line 30) or drive to the entrance of Val Bavona. The bus ride offers stunning views of the Ticino landscape and the Maggia River.
Explore Bignasco
Arrive at Bignasco, the main village in the valley. Visit the Parish Church of San Vittore, known for its frescoes and historical significance. Walk through the village square and admire the traditional Ticino architecture.
Hike to Pianscuro Waterfall
Take the well-marked path from Bignasco towards Pianscuro. This is a moderate hike (approx. 1.5-2 hours round trip) leading to the impressive 110-meter high waterfall. The trail passes through lush forests and offers refreshing views of the Maggia River.
Lunch at Pianscuro
Enjoy a traditional lunch at the restaurant near the waterfall. Try local specialties like risotto al nero di seppia or polenta with local cheese. The setting is picturesque and relaxing.
Drive/Hike to Bosco
Continue deeper into the valley. You can drive the narrow road to Bosco (parking available) or hike from Pianscuro (approx. 1.5 hours). Visit the hamlet of Bosco, the highest inhabited village in the valley. Explore the old stone houses, the church of San Giovanni Battista, and the 'Casa del Popolo'.
Visit Cavigliano and the Old Bridge
Descend back towards the valley entrance. Stop in Cavigliano to see the old stone bridge over the Maggia River and the charming village square. This area is quieter and offers great photo opportunities of the valley's entrance.
Dinner in Locarno
Return to Locarno for dinner. Choose a restaurant near the Piazza Grande or Lago Maggiore for a final meal of the day, perhaps enjoying the sunset over the lake.
Where to stay: Stay in Locarno for easy access to the valley and the lake. Alternatively, stay in Ascona for a more upscale lakeside experience. Booking in advance is recommended during peak summer months.
Getting around: Public transport (post bus) is reliable and scenic. However, renting a car offers more flexibility for stopping at viewpoints and reaching Bosco easily. If using public transport, check the SBB app for the Locarno-Bignasco-Bosco bus schedule.
