- Monte Brè
Monte Brè rises to the east of Lugano and has long been known for its mild microclimate and open views. Its history as a leisure destination goes back to the early 20th century, when the funicular began carrying visitors from the lakeshore to the summit. The easy access, together with sunny slopes and thick forest, soon made the mountain a favourite place for locals and for guests of the lake resort.
History and Heritage The funicular, in operation since 1912, is an attraction in its own right, a nostalgic ride through forest and hillside neighbourhoods. At the top, visitors find panoramic terraces, restaurants and the village of Brè, a traditional Ticinese settlement known for stone houses, narrow lanes and a lively art scene, with outdoor sculptures and murals by local and international artists. The village church of San Fedele has historic frescoes and is a quiet place to rest. The slopes below hold chestnut woods and old terraces that were farmed for centuries before the funicular arrived.
Main Attractions The main draw of Monte Brè is its views. From the summit, visitors look across Lake Lugano, the city below and the distant peaks of the Swiss and Italian Alps. Hiking trails cross the mountain, including the natural and archaeological path to Gandria, which runs through chestnut forest and past old olive trees and archaeological sites. The Olive Tree Trail, linking Brè with Gandria, is a highlight for nature lovers and history fans alike, and the walk ends at the water in a village of steep stairways and lakeside restaurants.
Monte Brè also has several panoramic restaurants and cafés where guests can enjoy Ticinese cooking with the scenery. The summit area has playgrounds and picnic spots that suit families, and art lovers will enjoy the open-air installations and the small galleries in the village.
Activities Monte Brè is a hub for outdoor activities. Hiking is the most popular, with trails for all ages and fitness levels. The descent from the summit to Lugano or Gandria is a favourite for walkers, with forest paths, mountain views and lakeside strolls. Mountain biking, trail running and photography are also popular, thanks to the varied terrain and the changing light.
In summer, the sunny slopes are good for picnics, while spring and autumn bring wildflowers and colourful foliage. The area is also a starting point for boat trips on Lake Lugano, with regular ferries to other lakeside towns.
Getting There Monte Brè is easily reached from the centre of Lugano. Visitors can take a city bus to the Cassarate funicular station and then ride the funicular, in two sections, to the summit. The trip takes about 20 minutes and offers fine views on the way. Those who prefer to walk can follow marked trails from Lugano or nearby villages, and parking is available at the base station for those who come by car.
Seasonal Advice April to late October is the best period, when the weather is mild and the trails are clear. Summer has the warmest temperatures and the longest days, good for hiking and outdoor dining, while spring and autumn bring quieter trails, wildflowers and rich colours. Sunset and early evening are especially fine, with golden light on the lake and the mountains. Winter is quieter, with limited services, though the views stay clear on good days. In every season Monte Brè’s mix of easy access, natural beauty and cultural charm makes a pleasant visit above Lugano.
