At about 2,500 metres, the summit of the Säntis is the highest point of the Alpstein massif in north-eastern Switzerland, and its observation terraces offer one of the broadest panoramas in the country. The mountain rises steeply from the Appenzell hills, touching three cantons, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen, and it stands apart from the main chain of the Alps, which is why the views carry so far in every direction.
The usual way up is the cable car from Schwägalp, a pass with a hotel and restaurant on the road between Appenzell and the Toggenburg. The ride lasts about ten minutes and climbs almost vertically over cliffs and meadows, giving a first taste of the scenery as the cabin rises. At the summit station, tunnels and stairways lead to outdoor platforms on the rocky top, with a tall transmission tower and the weather station among the buildings. The mountain has been a weather observation point for well over a century.
On a clear day the view includes Lake Constance to the north, with the Black Forest beyond it, and a broad sweep of Alpine summits to the south. Those who know the claim will hear that six countries are visible, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy and France, and while the farthest of these depends on good visibility, the sense of looking across borders is a real part of the experience. Weather changes quickly here, and a sea of cloud below the summit can be as memorable as a perfect view. The best advice is to check the webcam and forecast before travelling.
The summit is cold and windy even in summer, so bring a warm jacket, gloves and sturdy shoes, as the terraces and paths can be icy. A restaurant and a gallery inside the building give a place to warm up. Hikers can take marked paths along the ridge and across the Alpstein, which is a favourite hiking region of eastern Switzerland, and the area has well-known mountain inns at lower altitudes.
The deck suits families, photographers and anyone who wants a high-mountain view without a long climb. Operating times and fares change with the season, so check with the operator before setting out.
