The road over the Schwägalp climbs from the Appenzell hills toward the foot of the Säntis and reaches its top at about 1,280 metres, where the cantonal border of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and St. Gallen runs across the pass. The Gasthaus Passhöhe takes its name from that position, standing at the high point of the road in the classic role of a pass inn: a place for drivers, cyclists, hikers and skiers to stop, warm up and eat before continuing. Roadside inns like this have been part of Swiss mountain culture for centuries, and the building follows the familiar Appenzell mould of timber, deep eaves and a sunny terrace.
The cooking at such a house leans on the regional kitchen. Menus in the Appenzell and Toggenburg area typically feature dishes built on local cheese and dairy, such as cheese-topped rösti, Älplermagronen, sausages and cold platters with dried meats, with Appenzeller cheese and a glass of local herbal liqueur as regional signatures. Check the current menu rather than relying on a particular dish, since seasonal opening and offers change. The inn welcomes visitors for a drink on the terrace as readily as for a full meal.
What the place offers above all is its setting. From the terrace the view runs across open alpine pasture toward the long, steep wall of the Säntis, the highest summit of the Alpstein massif. Cows graze on the slopes through the summer, and the sound of their bells carries on a quiet day. In winter the same slopes carry snow, and the area around the pass is used for cross-country skiing and walking on prepared paths, while sledging on the slopes appeals to families.
The Säntis cable car leaves from the Schwägalp station a short distance away, so the inn works well as a stop before or after a trip to the summit and its observation terraces, which have their own entry in this guide. Marked trails also start near the pass, leading to alpine pastures, ridge paths and mountain huts of the Alpstein.
Opening depends on season and weather, with longer hours in summer and a limited programme in winter, so it is worth confirming times before making a special trip. Parking is available at the pass, and the Schwägalp is reached by bus from Urnäsch.
