- Wildhaus
Wildhaus lies at 1,090 meters in the Toggenburg, a classic Swiss alpine village with a mix of natural beauty, outdoor adventure and historical weight. The village is framed by the dramatic peaks of the Churfirsten and by the Säntis, which makes it a destination for mountain lovers and a gateway to some of eastern Switzerland’s fine landscapes.
History and Heritage
Wildhaus has a history that goes back to medieval times, but it is best known as the birthplace of Huldrych Zwingli, a leading figure of the Swiss Reformation, who was born here in 1484 in a farmhouse. The Geburtshaus Huldrych Zwingli, his preserved birth house, is now a museum where visitors can learn about his life and the religious history of the region. The village’s traditional architecture and alpine culture are still visible in its chalets and customs, and the Toggenburg valley is known for its own folk music, including natural yodel and the dulcimer-like Hackbrett.
Main Attractions
One of the main draws of Wildhaus is its access to the outdoors. The Bergbahnen Wildhaus cable cars and lifts give easy access to a network of hiking and biking trails in summer and to ski slopes and snow parks in winter. The area is known as a family-friendly ski resort, with gentle slopes for beginners and harder runs for experienced skiers. In summer the trails lead to viewpoints such as the Gamserrugg, with a famous view of the Churfirsten, as well as Hoher Kasten and Ebenalp, and to the quiet Schönenbodensee, a small lake for swimming and picnics.
Other attractions include the Badi Schönenbodensee, a lakeside beach and pool, and the local minigolf course. The Toggenburg Sound Trail and themed hiking routes give families and nature lovers interactive experiences. Those who want more adventure can ride the nearby Säntis cableway to the highest peak of the region, with wide views and alpine plants.
Activities
Wildhaus is a year-round destination for outdoor activities. In winter, visitors can ski, snowboard, sledge and take snowshoe hikes, including full-moon snowshoe tours. The ski area has modern lifts, ski schools and rental shops. In the warmer months, hiking, mountain biking and climbing are popular, with trails for all ages and abilities. The region’s beauty also makes it a favourite for photography, birdwatching and wellness breaks, and the Detective-Trail gives children a puzzle to solve as they walk.
Getting There
Wildhaus can be reached by public transport and by car. The nearest large city is St. Gallen, from which regular trains and buses run to the village. By car, well-kept mountain roads lead to Wildhaus, with ample parking. The village is also a convenient base for visits to the Principality of Liechtenstein, Vaduz Castle and the Flumserberg resort.
Seasonal Advice
The best time depends on interests. May to September brings mild temperatures, lush meadows and good conditions for hiking, biking and lake days. Winter, from December to March, turns the village into a snowy landscape for skiing and snow sports. Spring and autumn are quieter, with fewer visitors and changing colours, and prices for rooms are usually lower in the shoulder seasons, which makes these months attractive for visitors on a budget.
With its mix of alpine adventure, cultural heritage and family-friendly amenities, Wildhaus is a destination that captures the essence of Switzerland’s mountain spirit, and a small, welcoming village that deserves a longer stay than most visitors give it.
