Sattel

Sattel lies at about 800 meters in the canton of Schwyz, on a pass whose name means saddle. The position between hills made it a route for traders and armies, and it is tied to the Battle of Morgarten in 1315, when a force of Swiss confederates ambushed a Habsburg army on the slopes nearby. The village itself is small and quiet, with farms, chapels and a modern leisure industry built around the mountain above it.

History and Heritage The region’s history is explained at the Informationszentrum Morgarten, which tells the story of the battle that helped shape Swiss independence and gives visitors a clear route to the memorial sites in the surrounding hills. The Schweizer Dufour Museum honours Guillaume-Henri Dufour, the Swiss general and cartographer who led the Federal forces in 1847 and directed the first accurate map of the country, and it places the area in a wider military and map-making story. In the village, small churches such as the Kapelle Ecce Homo and the traditional timber houses add to the cultural landscape.

Main Attractions Sattel-Hochstuckli is the village’s main draw. Its revolving gondola, the Drehgondel Sattel-Mostelberg, was the first of its kind, and the cabin rotates slowly as it climbs, which gives a 360-degree view of the hills and lakes without any effort. At the top, the Skywalk suspension bridge stretches 374 meters across a deep valley, a thrilling walk for those who like height. The summer toboggan run and tubing track called Stuckli Run are favourites with families, and a children’s playground and themed hiking trails keep younger visitors busy. In winter the area becomes a gentle family ski resort with easy slopes, snow parks and snowshoe trails.

In summer, hiking and biking trails, including the Mäderenweg and the Pfad Trail, run through forests, meadows and viewpoints, and barbecue sites and picnic spots invite long lunches. Getting There Sattel is reached by train and bus from Zurich, Lucerne and Schwyz, and the Sattel-Aegeri station is a short walk from the gondola base. By car the village is reached by mountain roads with parking near the lifts. The layout is compact and the signs are clear, with most attractions within walking distance or a short gondola ride.

Summer temperatures often range from about 15 to 24 degrees Celsius, comfortable for outdoor activity.
