The Drehgondel Sattel-Mostelberg starts in Sattel, a village in the canton of Schwyz in central Switzerland, on a high pass between the Lake Zug area and the Rothenthurm moor, and the rotating gondola that rises from it to the Mostelberg is one of the more unusual cable cars in the country. The cabin turns slowly through a full circle as it climbs, so every passenger gets the view in all directions without having to move, and the ride gives a changing panorama of the green hills, the villages and the lakes below. It belongs to the Sattel-Hochstuckli leisure area, a family-oriented destination in the foothills of the Alps.

The cableway lifts visitors to the Mostelberg plateau in about ten minutes, an easy and comfortable ride that suits children and older people, and the cabins can take wheelchairs and prams. The mountain is mainly a destination for gentle outings rather than serious mountaineering. At the top there are meadows, walking paths, a mountain restaurant and a playground, with picnic spots and benches scattered around the terrace. A short walk leads to viewpoints where, on clear days, you can see across the Lake Zug basin and the Zurich area, and toward the high peaks of the Alps on the horizon, with the Mythen and Rigi mountains standing nearby in the foreground. The rotating cabin also makes the descent attractive, as the view is reversed.

The area has historical interest as well. The battlefield of Morgarten, where in 1315 the early Swiss Confederates defeated an Austrian army in a famous ambush, lies close to Sattel, and the nearby marshland of Rothenthurm is a protected moor of national importance, the result of a popular vote in 1987 to preserve it. A visit to the cable car can therefore be combined with a look at the memorial at Morgarten and a walk through the moorland. Hiking trails lead from the Mostelberg to other points in the Hochstuckli area, and in winter, a small ski area and sledging runs operate when there is snow.

Operating times and ticket prices depend on the season and weather, and the cableway may pause for maintenance, so check the operator’s website before you go. Clear weather matters, since the point of the ride is the view, and low cloud can hide the scenery. The gondola is easy to reach by car from Zurich, Lucerne and Zug, and there are bus connections from nearby railway stations.

The cable car suits families with young children, grandparents and anyone looking for a gentle outing with a view. Allow two to three hours including the ride and a short walk.
