Kandersteg

Alpine village with lakes, hiking, and UNESCO scenery

Kandersteg lies in a lush alpine valley ringed by towering peaks, a village that expresses the spirit of the Bernese Oberland. Its history is tied to the old trade routes over the Lötschen Pass, and the village has long served as a resting place for traders, pilgrims and mountaineers. Today it is known for its natural beauty, outdoor adventure and traditional Swiss hospitality.

History and Heritage The origins of Kandersteg go back to medieval times, when the valley was a strategic passage through the Alps. The building of the Lötschberg railway tunnel in the early 20th century brought new prosperity and easier access, turning the village into a popular resort. Despite that growth, Kandersteg has kept its alpine character, with wooden chalets, flower-filled balconies and a strong sense of community. The Gemmi Pass, a historic crossing to the Valais, also starts from the village area, and Kandersteg has been the home of an international scout centre since the 1920s.

Main Attractions The principal attraction is Lake Oeschinen (Oeschinensee), a turquoise mountain lake surrounded by dramatic cliffs and alpine meadows. It is reached by a gondola and a short walk, and in summer it offers swimming, rowing, fishing and picnics, while in winter it is used for ice skating and tobogganing. The panoramic hike around the lake is a must for visitors, with fine views and a chance to spot marmots and alpine flowers.

Another highlight is the Gasterntal Valley, a wild glacial valley that suits hiking, cycling and nature photography. Its rugged beauty and calm make it a favourite for walkers who want solitude. The Sunnbüel and Allmenalp cable cars give access to high trails, alpine pastures and viewpoints, while the Gemmi Pass connects Kandersteg with the Valais region and the spa village of Leukerbad.

Activities Kandersteg is a year-round destination for outdoor people. In summer there is a large network of hiking and biking trails, from gentle valley walks to demanding alpine routes. The Sommerrodelbahn, a mountain coaster, and adventure playgrounds provide family fun, while paragliding and rock climbing attract the adventurous. In winter Kandersteg becomes a cross-country skiing centre, with more than 50 kilometres of groomed trails, as well as snowshoeing, sledding and winter hiking. Many visitors combine a morning at the lake with an easy afternoon walk in the valley bottom.

The village itself is pleasant to explore, with cosy restaurants serving Swiss dishes, small shops and regular cultural events. It is also a base for day trips to the Jungfrau region, Blausee (Blue Lake) and other Bernese Oberland sights.

Getting There Kandersteg can be reached by train, with direct connections from Bern and Spiez. The village is compact and walkable, with local buses and taxis for excursions. By car, mountain roads lead to the village, with parking near the gondola stations and in the centre. The station is a short walk from the village centre, and the gondola to the lake leaves from a stop that is well signed from the main street.
